The illumination is based on the Manesse Codex. It's Swiss/German from the early-mid 1300s.

Holy Carp! A bajillion years ago my mum was given a calendar with some of these images. She liked them so much she had some of them framed. The last 2 are hanging on the wall in my son's computer room. I had no idea where they came from and had assumed they were someone's idea of Medieval paintings.

I just might have to put them in a slightly more prominent spot.
