Pennsic Personal Log

This year for war, I chronicled my activities as if writing a personal log for a sci-fi/space tv show. This came about after spending a week reading Duchess Dagmar’s FB posts about the great Crapiderm Migration across the Serengeti and watching the episode of the Big Bang Theory that ends with the guys going to a Ren Faire with Sheldon dressed as Spock.

Here are my entries:

Personal Log, Pennsic-Date 0727.46

My 50 week Ambassadorial assignment to Mundania is almost over. I admit to feeling a small amount of depression about leaving as it has been my home for the last 48 weeks, 5 days and the people here have become familiar and have welcomed my presence. But I do miss my friends and family and know that in no time I will be back into the thick of things when I return to my duties in 3 days.

I am currently waiting on some diplomatic documents that I have been asked to courier back with me and deliver to the representatives of a foreign nation, but I have been assured that they will be in my possession before I leave. While I wait for them to arrive, I busy myself with finishing up other paperwork requirements so that my replacement will not be left floundering when they take my place.

I also need to finish packing my shuttle and double checking the lists so that I do not forget anything. Luckily most never got unpacked from when I arrived here almost a year ago.

Word has reached me that the Organization’s command staff has been busy while I’ve been gone with preparations for an invasion of potentially 10,000 or more individuals who are coming to negotiate treaties and resolve conflicts between nations. Where are we going to put them all? I can only hope that things go smoothly and my first days back to duty will be on the quiet side so I can get settled back into the routine.

Personal Log, Pennsic date 0728.46

I spent last night busily trying to finish my preparations for departure. I found the last of my uniforms and insignias of rank that I had put away during my time in Mundania. While many Mundanes are open minded, they did generally seem uncomfortable when they saw me in my uniforms and decorations of rank, thus I chose to put them aside and wore the costuming of the area. But everything has been found and the shuttle is packed and ready for departure. All I need to do is ensure an adequate fuel supply and put in the last things that will go in when I leave.

I also took the time to do a final local ritual around my dwelling. Those who inhabit the dwellings by mine do a bizarre ritual called “lawn worship” which mostly entails manicuring and cultivating the local vegetation into uniform areas and colorful displays. So as to not be a bother and annoy those I have had to live closely with within the community, I have gone through the motions to keep the vegetation around my dwelling under some semblance of “control”. Luckily this will be the last I have to do that ritual.

Today is my last day in the Ambassadorial Office so will mostly entail taking care of “just one more thing before you go” as is always the case. I am still waiting on the diplomatic documents, but hopefully they will arrive today. Unfortunately these are of a sensitive nature that will require the foreign diplomats to physically sign the papers, so a digital copy is not optional.
After I turn in the last of my paperwork this afternoon, I will make my way to the stylist to get my appearance back to acceptable. I do admit that between the clothing and the living arrangements, I have gone rather “native” while living in Mundania.

Missives from the Organization also say that the delegations are starting to arrive for the negotiations. Luckily the Organization has secured property and has set up a temporary Headquarters and is requiring all those who come to go through registration and processing… even those of us who are not part of the delegations but work for the Organization. It was advised that if I want to get through in a timely manner, I should plan on departing Mundania early so that my arrival back will not be overly held up by the processing process.

I will admit that I am finally starting to feel excited about returning home. Mundania is nice but I wouldn’t want to live here permanently.

Shuttlecraft Cossack is packed, clearance had been given, departure momentary.

Personal log, supplemental,

I have safely reunited with my crew and have secured personal quarters.
Registration and processing was not as tedious as I had been led to believe it would be. When I registered at 0800, 2646 members have already shown up for negotiations it is still anticipated to have over 10,000 by the end.

Personal log, supplemental

After arranging my quarters, I checked in with Command and was issued a new communicator. I was also informed that I am to report to duty at 0800 tomorrow and that there will be a staff meeting at that time to discuss the situation regarding all of the arriving delegates.

After then delivering documents to the foreign diplomat, I spent some time walking the grounds to reacquaint myself with things. Along the way I saw friends among various delegation posts and enjoyed the ability to catch up with them.

I look forward to more such visits. But for now I need to turn in so that i can be rested for my shift tomorrow.

I was asked to represent and provide voice for the lands of Atlantia to the Organization. This allowed me to bear witness to the promotion of a crew mate. It was an emotional experience and well deserved.

I am now 13 hours into my first duty shift. So far the arriving delegations have been basically behaving, though reluctant to put their personal shuttles to the designated storage facilities. This, I suspect will be an ongoing issue.

Personal log, Pennsic-date 0731.46

Just as I was considering heading to my quarters for some sleep, one of my subordinates contacted me to say his relief was past due. Despite attempts by communicator and going to his quarters, I was unable to locate the next shift. Therefore, As a commander should, I have gone to the office to be the relief.

While sleep would be nice, one has a duty to perform. I can sleep in another 8 hours. Besides, I can use this time to get reacquainted with the night shift team.
I should see if there is any liquid caffeine in the stores as I think this will be a long night.

Personal log, Pennsic-date 0801.46

My stay in Mundania has caused me to no longer be used to the rigors of my duties with the Organization. A 20 hour shift wiped me out and i ended up sleeping most of my day off yesterday.
But I did wake in time to attend a social gathering hosted by one of the foreign delegates. It was an entertaining experience to listen to the exchange of cultural stories and songs. Man those Calontiri can sing. I was persuaded to participate and shared what it is like to work for the Organization.

Today I have another 24 hour supervisory shift. Most this entails trying to help convince delegates to put their shuttles in storage and occasionally intervening and mediating dispute between rival factions.

I hope the negotiations between the larger nations works before the disputes become worse.

Personal log, Pennsic Date 0802.46

My shift yesterday was fairly uneventful up until two different delegation enclaves discovered they had both brought Jurassic fauna from their homelands. This led to a battle of dominance between them that required Organization mediation. Eventually things were called when it was pointed out that all members of the delegations must be appropriately dressed and registration tags showing, including service animals. Though I am not sure what service a t-rex provides.

As of 20:00 last night there were 5438 members of the various delegations here. Shuttle parking still remains an issue, but I am off duty for 24 hours so that is my relief's problem.

Personal log supplemental

This evening my home nation permitted my Uncle Haakon Oaktall and his wife, Elenore to celebrate their wedding anniversary with a gathering of singers and storytellers.

While this celebration was happening, Timothy and Gabrielle, current Leaders of my homelands gave a special recognition to each of them through an Augmentation of Arms. This is a rare and high honor and I could not be prouder of my family.

Afterwards, i had to assist one of my subordinates in dealing with a food vender who attempted to bypass the registration process. They were politely asked to leave the facilities and not return.

Tomorrow, or is it today?, I enter another 24 hour duty cycle. May it be a quiet one.

Personal log, Pennsic-date 0803.46

15 hours into latest duty shift. Mostly it has been uneventful until I had to do an escort that caused me to drop my personal communicator. Luckily was found by a delegate who found it and alerted a crewmate of it's whereabouts.

Earlier today I ran into the ruler of my homelands who indicated that negotiations amongst the other leaders is not going well. I am concerned that peace is more fragile than I suspected.

Personal log, Pennsic date 0804.46

Today saw facility wide environmental failures which resulted in many corridors and delegation quarters being flooded. Despite being my day off, I was called in to assist with emergency recovery.

After many hours, most of it drenched, I returned to my quarters to learn that my personal quarters were effected as well. Two walls were rendered structurally ineffective against the water. A good chunk of my uniforms and some bedding is if not damp, down right dripping and will need tending to in the morning. I am annoyed that no one in the vicinity of my quarters checked mine despite knowing I was helping the Organization deal with the environmental issues.

I currently have the heat on in my quarters in hope it will dry out some before I need to turn in

Personal log, Pennsic Date 0805.46

Duty shift day but I was able to resecure my quarters and attempt to dry it out. One of the delegates from my homeland offered to help me get uniforms and bedding dry. Tracy is a good friend. I will see if I can procure baked goods for a thank you.

I have not heard how many have gone through registration but as of 19:30 yesterday we had 7576 processed.

Unfortunately negotiations have failed and at around 18:30 today war was declared. But the politically interesting thing is that long time enemies have joined forces against their usual allies.

Tonight is a huge gathering at one of the enclaves, lots of alcohol, loud music and probably debauchery. But they say there is often a last hurrah before battle.

May their gods and deities watch over them.

Personal log, Pennsic date 0806.46

Today I spent the morning using my tiny kitchen alcove to make baked goods from my homelands to give as thank you tokens for those that helped me when my quarters got flooded.
Later, thought it was my day off from supervisory duty, i attended various meetings to discuss possible promotions.

As of 21:30 10147 individuals have processed in. There were skirmishes and battles between the sides, but they were on the small side. I hear tomorrow there is a big battle planned, as well as my next 24 hour duty shifts.

Next day, new day, hope to survive

Personal log, Pennsic date 0807.46

The visual indication that battles are happening is the arrival of more medical shuttles

Personal log, supplemental

I was told today that my uniform is "highly appropriate"
I think there might be something wrong with The translators

Personal log, Pennsic date 0808.46

Yesterday's duty shift saw me sitting at a corridor making sure those that were going to engage in the ongoing Battle did not block the corridors and thus prevent medical personnel reaching any wounded. Luckily after 5+ hours, no transports were needed.

In the evening one of the folks I am mentoring introduced me and others to new family and and learning relationships.

After that, I had to monitor post battle celebrations that remained more or less calm... for the Swampies anyway.

Today was an off duty day. I heard battles happening in the distance, butI kept my distance. Instead, I visited my tailor to get fitted for new uniforms. I then acquired new insignia of rank.

I then got dressed in dress uniform and attended a 3 hour ceremony hosted by the rulers of my homelands. This saw the elevation of ranks and awarding of honors to many individuals.
After the ceremony we partook in an "ancient and venerable tradition" of frozen confection consumption evening.

My plans for the rest of the night are to consume a beverage designed to cause relaxation and try to stay warm as the environmental controls seem to be set on "cool leaning towards cold"

Personal log, Pennsic-date 0809.46

My latest 24 duty shift started out fairly routine, until Command called me in to help direct incoming troop transports for a battle today.

This required flagging and telling the pilots where to dock their transports to unload and move on. For MANY hours. By the end I ached and found myself being cranky.

But my mood improved when the Rulers of the Ealdormereans came and informed a crew mate of an impending promotion. She is spending the evening contemplating the promotion and listening to advice of those of us of similar rank as she is being promoted to.

One of the side effects of the gatherings of so many delegations is a thriving commerce industry that pops up. Tonight the bazaar held an after-hours mega sale. I took advantage of the sales and picked up fabric for new uniforms.

My ankle has decided to be argumentative from all the walking I have been doing, so I plan to spend the rest of my shift off my feet.

Personal log, Pennsic date 0810.46

24 hours off duty. Spent the morning torturing those surrounding my quarters with the smell of baking two batches of sweet baked goods. It was great.

This evening I went to witness the promotion of my Crewmate Dagmar. It was emotional, especially when the rulers started tearing up.

Tonight i and a friend will "invade" a friend's quarters and inform her that we are partaking in adult beverages in her kitchen alcove.

Personal log, pennsic date 0811.46

24 hour duty shift has been emotionally draining. Sometimes you can go years without being the "designated female staff member" and sometimes it is twice in one day.

Word has come that the war has been declared over with the Grand Alliance being the victors. Final count was 10590 through registration and processing.

I have been told that I need to return to Mundania. The office there needs my experience so tomorrow after my shift ends, I will pack my belongings back up and return there.

I wonder if my dwelling there is still available... but I will probably need to lawn worship again. Darn it.
