baronessekat: (cold)

Enough all ready

I'm ready for the bone numbing cold to stop. I can more or less deal with the snow. It's a pain to drive in, and after dark sends me into wonderful panics if I have to do so, but it's pretty in its way.

But the cold can go. Today actually felt WARM because it was up to 8ºF this morning with a wind chill of only -15º.

It's been too damn cold out to do anything more than run (or penguin waddle) between work and the car and the car and home. And at home, the downstairs of my townhouse is so cold that I don't like staying there. Hell, I get home from work and get greeted by three cats (yes all three), herded into the pantry to feed them, given 20 minutes to find myself some dinner and check my email before they start yelling at me to come upstairs, curl up under blankets with them and be warm. And this is with keeping the thermostat set at 76º. You know it's cold when even Miss Alex The Anti-Social is puppy piled with the other two and UNDER blankets.

In theory it is supposed to warm up some this weekend so that Dicea and I can go out and help with the Flat Stanley project. Right now I have three pictures for it. We may end up having to do post cards and say that we would have loved to have taken Flat Stanley around to see all the neat and historical places in the Buffalo-Niagara Region of New York, but perhaps he needs to come visit again in either April or October when we are not risking severe frostbite.

I love the idea behind the project for teaching kids about other places in their world. Hell, just the little bit of research I did to find different historical and tourist places around here was rather enlightening. But it certainly would be easier if we weren't fighting Mother Nature to help out.

I am almost tempted to do a picture of Flat Stanley in a snow bank next to a snow shovel and include a quote for a very short run TV show: "Welcome to Buffalo, grab a shovel".

OK, I'm done for now. I guess the moral of this little rant is - Ekat hates being cold.

One, I really appreciate your efforts on Flat Stanley. I dont' know what I was thinking...he went to Buffalo, and Fairbanks. Waiting to see what comes back from Alaska....

Two, I'm cold too. Can't get warm. Even under the covers.

August anyone?

It's a great project and a great idea for kids. But I am seriously thinging to include a note to his teacher suggesting that this unit be moved to slightly warmer times of the year. So that those that are helping the students can give them things that would help make their projects really work well.

There are so many things and places to see and visit in our area. But a lot of them are outdoors (or at least the parts that would make better pictures). And gee... not exactly like Niagara Falls can be seen inside. Or Forest Lawn Cemetary and President McKinley's grave (unfortunately they didn't park him in a Mossoleum).

We will have stuff for Flat Stanley. Just may not be as much as we would have liked to have done. But that's only because of safety and self-preservation.

My Goodcat has been strongly considering joining me *under* the covers, which she hasn't since kittenhood. My place is that ocld. And my bedroom's the coldest room in the house, natch.

When I win the lottery (!), I am SO going to buy everyone in the household SmartWool PJ's!!

As I was dressing this morning resolved to ask you about this. Can you email me a link or info? Maybe it will help.

Try here:

If you google around for "SmartWool" you will find them at different places.

I bought ours at an REI (hiking & mountain) store.

So long as mine are SmartWool that's not Wool.

there are very few types I can have against my skin.

But I like the idea.

The SmartWool socks are cheaper than the clothes, so you could try out a pair of those. They don't feel like wool - more like a really great t-shirt (very light weight). And washable!

Hmmmm. I'm thinking.... Photoshop. We should be able to find some good pics online and we've got the shots with T in them. It should be the work of an hour or so to clip out the image of him and then only a few moments each to stack them onto other shots. Cheating? Hell yeah. But, quite frankly, none of the interesting stuff looks very interesting right now.

Of course, we'll have to send along the instructions that to truely appreciate the photos, everyone in the class must stuff ice cubes into their pants and shoes.

When it's warm, we'll get the REAL T up to visit and take him to the REAL cool places.

I'm not a real fan of cold either. I wonder if it wouldn't be worth it to take the next TDY to New Mexico!!

And I'm dreading Friday morning. We have mandatory firearms training... all outside on Friday. What they hell were they thinking?? They couldn't do this in May? After inspection and AFTER it warmed up a little?

All I can say is SOMEBODY better help warm me up at the end of the day!
