After consultation with 2bluefish it was determined that I had purchased the wrong kind of light switch for the stairwell.

So back to home despot, found someone there in an orange apron with a clue and picked up a new switch.

Replaced it this morning and YES! no more tripping on the stairs on my way to bed.

YEA!!!! I'm glad that over the phone help worked. In the big picture it was easy. I'm glad it all worded out and that you know enough to switch the breaker off. YEA!!!!
