Great Recipe Experiment 2014 #1 - Salted Preztel Caramel Brownies

Yesterday was Baronial 12th Night and Potluck. When asked what kind of thing I should bring, I was told with a resounding voice that my baked goods are always appreciated.

So, what better excuse do I need to start this years Recipe Experiments.

So...

Ingredients

1 box Betty Crocker fudge brownies (for a 9x13 pan)
2 eggs
1/4 cup water
2/3 cup vegetable oil
3 cups pretzels
1 jar caramel sauce
coarse sea salt

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a 9x13-inch baking pan with parchment paper, or grease with cooking spray.

2. Prepare brownie batter according to package instructions.

3. Pour about 1/3 of the brownie batter into the prepared baking pan. Spread until the bottom of the pan is evenly coated. Then add two even layers of pretzels, covering the entire surface. Carefully spoon the remaining brownie batter on top to cover the pretzels.

4. Bake for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the middle of the brownies comes out clean.

5. Remove and set on a cooling rack to cool.

6. Spoon the caramel sauce onto the top of the brownies in an even layer. (If it is too thick, spoon the sauce into a small bowl first and microwave for 30 seconds to thin.) Sprinkle the caramel with a few pinches of sea salt.

7. Serve warm, or let cool to room temperature then serve.

My variations

* I just used a store brand so I just followed the box directions for mixing the cake.

* When I went shopping for ingredients, I could not find jars of caramel sauces so I ended up settling for a bottle of caramel syrup. This resulted in VERY gooey and sticky brownies that you more or less had to eat with a spoon.

* I only did one layer of pretzels as I used a pan too big to separate the batter into thirds and still get full coverage

Thoughts

* The feedback from 12th Night AND the coworkers who got inflicted with the left overs today is summed up in two words: OMG and EVIL.

* The women at work all said these need to be renamed PMS brownies because it's the perfect combination of chocolate, sugar and salt for that time of the month.

* The brownie guy at work said "heat it up and put it on vanilla ice cream."

* When I make them again (as I've been told there will be an "again"), I will crush/break up the pretzels because whole ones made it hard to cut.

* I may look for dark chocolate chips to add just another level of evil.

Rating (out of 5)

I will give this incarnation a 4.5. With the changes I want to make next time it may get a higher rating.
