Great Recipe Experiment 2014 #3 - Crockpot Ham
I ran into a problem just before Easter. My oven stopped working (and that's something I do need to get looked at). But that left me with a 9 lb. ham that would not fit in my little convection oven to cook for 6 people who were coming for a pre-Easter get together.
So off to the internet I went and found:
From: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Slow-Cooker-Ham
Ingredients: Original recipe makes 24 servings
2 cups packed brown sugar
1 (8 pound) cured, bone-in picnic ham
Directions
*Spread about 1 1/2 cups of brown sugar on the bottom of the slow cooker crock.
*Place the ham flat side down into the slow cooker - you might have to trim it a little to make it fit.
*Use your hands to rub the remaining brown sugar onto the ham.
*Cover, and cook on Low for 8 hours.
Variation
*My ham had a bone in it that did not fit into the crockpot, so I removed the bone before cooking
*the ham I had was already a brown sugar glazed ham, so instead I just put 1/4 cup of brown sugar at the bottom of the crock and did not rub any on the ham itself.
Thoughts
I liked it, but next time will try to find a non-glazed ham as it was a bit too sweet.
Everyone else at the dinner remarked on how moist it was.
I think this may be a regular way to cook a ham to free up the oven space (that is once I get it fixed) for other meal fixings.
