I'm putting this behind a cut for those who don't care to hear about SCA complaining and what not.

So the local canton for me put out a call for help. They are in need of a Senechal (amonst other officers) in order to stay afloat. I had been considering for a while about getting active again on a local level and thought this might be a good way to do it.

After talking with my Peer, my best friend, and doing some soul searching, I decide that if they really want to stay alive and are willing to work for it, I would be willing to put my hat in the ring and volunteer to be seneschal.

I email the person who put the call out back on November 7th, saying just that... if the canton REALLY wants to make it work, and are willing to do the work and not just mouth it, I would submit for consideration to be the group senechal. But I wanted confirmation that it would be a group thing and not just one or two people (including myself) who fight to keep the canton alive.

The cut off for the submissions was Friday the 24th. I still had not heard anything from the contact person regarding the sincerity of the plea. So I figure moot point. If the person who put out the plea can't even respond to an email asking how much people want it, obviously it's a non-issue and the canton should fade away.

But then I get the email this morning saying that only one other person has said they'd be willing to do it, and they don't even reside in the canton but in free lands of AEthelmearc, and if I still want the job it's mine. The response was also with the phrase "I wish you had dropped me a line sooner...". '

Excuse me?!?!? I sent it a week after I got the AEstel with the call for help and two days after talking with my Peer about if I should make the offer. Who's the one who took 18 days to respond to a simple question?

There is a canton meeting tonight and I will go to take a straw poll of the few people there, and I'm trying not to let my flash temper say "don't do it" just to spite them, but seriously...

I'm pissed off with the phrase about contacting sooner. And after reading the history of the canton and the issues they have had, I'm really thinking that the best thing involved would be for the canton to die.

But I will talk to the people. Offer suggestions and see what comes of the meeting tonight.

Thank you for letting me vent.

Not that I've got an opinion or anything but...

I think you should write back immediately detailing why you replied when you replied and point out to that person that this is why his bloody canton is dying.

There is nothing worse than the rude arrogance that people develop in any volunteer organization, but especially the SCA, that volunteers are meat for the grinder and those who fail to jump in promptly and cheerfully are useless. Most of us who are involved in a long-term volunteer organization will go through phases of more involvement and less involvement. This is healthy and good. It is hard enough to learn and practice saying "no" at the right times without people saying things like "I wish you'd contacted me sooner." or "But you're good at this sort of thing, you have to do it." or "But we all just thought you could take care of it. Don't you want to help?". People who do these things should be stopped and corrected immediately. You have to rub their nose in what and why is wrong about it.

We have a knight because we need someone who we can trust to say, "Slow down some." or "It would be nice to see you becoming more active, if you're ready." He takes care of that so other peers don't have to risk personal damage and emotional trauma trying to manipulate us into doing uneeded work.

Don't fret about it. Don't let that person's personal style affect what you do. If they really need you they will ask you to do the job, if not, well at least you offered in a reasonable timeframe. I can't make a huge time comittment without a bit of thought and consultation, so don't feel bad about doing the right thing.

It's funny how some folks can make you feel bad about giving away your time and energy.

Just to be sure

Nuke from orbit, repeat as needed. Then salt the earth so nothing stupid ever sprouts there again.

The Sca is a consumer of that which we never get back. Time is finite and the SCA eats time like termite is a red wood.
