2023 To-Do List

HEALTH: Re-committing to getting healthy with the new year. I am not going to itemize things here. I just need to get healthier.

not so much. I actually gained more weight this year. But I have started towards getting better by making appointments with a hematologist (per my PCP’s orders) as numbers were getting weird. I was supposed to see a neurologist and a gastroenterologist this year but due to a change I will mention later, I had to reschedule and both have been moved to mid/late January

Hobbies and Activities (not exercise or SCA related): I am still hoping to break my tendency to sit in my chair in front of the TV playing stupid games on my phone. Therefore, my goal is to do more of the following:

1. Reading: I have several reading challenges again picked out for 2023. Would like to tackle more of the physical books I already own.

I completed two reading challenges and almost completed several others. In total I read and/or listened to 96 books in 2023 – a record for me

2. Photos: I have had fun the last couple years doing different “photo a day” challenges so I intend to keep that up.

I kinda let this fall by the wayside during/after Pennsic. It became a chore rather than something fun.

3. Creativity: I have found that I feel better when I am being creative. My mental health suffers if I go to long, so I am going to try to make sure to do something creative at least every couple of days.

I started strong by doing a crochet book-log blanket (format, length and genre reflected in the stitch, color and rows), but that too became more of a chore than creative outlet around August – mostly because I didn’t expect to read as many books as I did. The only real creative thing I did that was not SCA related was participate in an Advent ornament exchange where I made 24 ornaments. Oh ,I did to a paint project with my sister over Christmas but those two things are about it.

SCA:
1. Tackle the backlog scroll list.

Yeah, that didn’t happen. In fact I added to it

2. Work on my research projects. I have all the info for a paper that just needs to be written and the material to make another project based on images in manuscripts.

Again, didn’t happen. Didn’t even crack a book open or start an outline.

3. Scroll Cases – I have too much cardboard in my garage that needs to be converted into cases

Hahahahahaha. I have more cardboard in my garage. Maybe next year.

4. Do what I can to help my students achieve their SCA goals and dreams.

I think I managed to do this somewhat. – did it for two of the three active Minions. I encouraged Minionus Minimus to explore helping out at Pennsic and she jumped in feet first into helping at the watch. She also asked for my support (which I happily gave) to submit herself for the Pennsic Internship Program to learn how the war operates. I have paired with a Duchess in Atlantia to help Minionus Claustrarium get seen more in his home Kingdom, and encouraging him to attend and help out at more events besides Pennsic and War Practice.

House: I am finding that my mental health is being affected by my surroundings. So my goal is to start working on decluttering, cleaning and sprucing up my surroundings

I wish I had been able to do something. But I kept finding myself fighting strong executive disfunction everytime I thought about starting on some aspect of decluttering/cleaning/sprucing up my house and environment.

Ashley Boxes: They make me and others happy.

I ended up doing 4. I have only heard from one of the recipients that they greatly enjoyed having something to open each day.

Social time: As much as current conditions allow; I’d like to keep up the attempt to be social. Maybe change one of the Family Zoom dinners each month to a host folks over for games, chatting, movies

Somewhat. Hosted a couple chosen family game days.

New Employment: The continued emotional stress is getting to me. By the end of 2023 I MUST find new employment. I am going to be a lot more proactive about getting out. I believe that this will be a big help with me mental well-being.

ACHIEVED!!!!!! I buckled down early 2023 and started applying everywhere that seemed even remotely in line for what I wanted/needed. Mid-may I started an interview process that took 3 months to complete and received an offer end of July. I gave notice the day I got back from Pennsic and the following week I started at a not-for-profit organization that has welcomed me with open arms, more money, more PTO, better health benefits and an awesome boss who lets me know how much she appreciates me and treats me like a partner in many aspects of her job. This is the one goal of 2023 that was an absolute success.

2024 To-Do List

My phrase for 2024 is “Recommit with kindness”. Now that I have reclaimed (my 2023 word) the part of my life that I needed in order to take care of myself better – got away from the toxic job that was killing me – literally (my hematologist said that the stress hormones in my blood were through the roof), I can now, hopefully, focus on the other things I need to do to better take care of myself. But I am not going to listen to the Brain Weasels if something sets me back or I fail. I will be kind to myself.

HEALTH: Re-committing to getting healthy with the new year. Eat healthier, exercise more, drink more water, hopefully lose weight.

Hobbies and Activities (not exercise or SCA related): I am still hoping to break my tendency to sit in my chair in front of the TV playing stupid games on my phone. Therefore, my goal is to do more of the following:

1. Reading: I really like doing reading challenges and have picked many for 2024 to do. I am upping my goal to 80 books this year (it’s been 75 in the past) as for the last several years I have gone past 75. Though it would be nice to hit 100 sometime.
2. Photos:Going to try again. But ONLY if it makes me happy.
3. Creativity: I am recommitting to do something creative every month. I am running an advent ornament exchange this year and I have plans for my contribution. But I want to do something creative at least once a month – painting, embroidery, crochet, something.

SCA:

1. Attend some more events. I miss people, but finances and political things may prevent this from happing. We shall see how 2024 goes.
2. Tackle the backlog scroll list.
3. Scroll Cases – I have too much cardboard in my garage that needs to be converted into cases
4. Do what I can to help my students achieve their SCA goals and dreams.

House: There are things I want to do to reclaim my space – declutter, paint some of the rooms, recover chairs for the kitchen and dining room, etc. I do think it will help my mental space to get my physical space in order.

Ashley Boxes: They make me and others happy. I have already started getting items.

Social time: I would like to either change one of the monthly family Zoom gatherings to in-person dining out OR add a monthly family food night to the calendar. I’m also thinking at least once a quarter hosing physical game day at the Doma. Others enjoy it too. Hosting people to the Doma also helps me keep it cleaner and less cluttered.

2022 To-Do List

HEALTH: Re-committing to getting healthy with the new year.
1. Lose weight for better movement and breathing ability.
2. Some form of intentional exercise at least every other day,
3. Do better about eating “real meals” more.
4. Hit my step goal of 8k daily (this does not count as intentional exercise)
5. Drink at least 64oz. of water a day (if not a full gallon).
6. I also am going to start tracking my sleep, take note of high pain days and moods to see what kind of trends I am experiencing
• Yeah, not so much. I did track my sleep and I averaged almost 7 hours a night. But intentional exercise, weight loss, real meals, water each day even real meals not very good.

Hobbies and Activities (not exercise or SCA related: I am still hoping to break my tendency to sit in my chair in front of the TV playing stupid games on my phone or tablet. Therefore, my goal is to do more of the following:
1. Reading: I have several reading challenges again picked out for 2022. But I have found that I tend to gravitate to audiobooks for when I’m in the car and the like, instead of physically reading as much as I used to. So, I’m setting a goal of physically reading a minimum of 20 minutes daily.
2. Photos: I have had fun the last couple years doing different “photo a day” challenges so I intend to keep that up.
3. Creativity: I have found that I feel better when I am being creative. My mental health suffers if I go to long, so I am going to try to make sure to do something creative at least every couple of days.
• I did better here. 82 books completed. However, physical reading was not as regular as I would have liked. I did the photo a day. I didn’t get as much creative work done as I would have liked.

SCA: Things are starting to slowly open back up, so my goals are:
1. Tackle the backlog scroll list. I am going to try to get a backlog done at least every other month (if not sooner)
2. Work on my research projects. I have all the info for a paper that just needs to be written and the material to make another project based on images in manuscripts.
3. Scroll Cases – I have too much cardboard in my garage that needs to be converted into cases
4. Do what I can to help my students achieve their SCA goals and dreams.
• I was inducted into the Order of the Laurel. However, the actual goals that I set… not so much.

House: Once again slowly make the home improvements I didn’t do last year, so here’s the goals
1. Garage: I really, really, really need to get the garage resorted, stuff out and gone. Need to reach out to people who have stuff stored in there to see if they still want the stuff and if so, when can they come get it.
2. Dining Room: I want to replace the ancient and ugly curtains and to maybe reupholster the chairs. I have a paint color picked out but that’s going to be a while before that happens.
3. Family Room: I have the paint picked out. I want to paint the very dated paneling. After that I want to get the highboy dresser up out of the basement, refinished as needed and use it to replace the dead tv that is currently acting as a stand for the new tv.
4. Living Room: come summer, I want to take the curtains in the living room down and paint out the bay window area. I also want to use the same color to paint the one wall in the stairwell and the casement for the doorway between the living room and dining room.
5. Florida Room: get back to working to clean up and organize the room
6. Upstairs Hall: I’d like to paint the walls (I have plenty of paint left from painting the living room in 2020) and pull out the orange rug from hell and refinish the floor like I did on the stairs.
• None of this was accomplished

Ashley Boxes: They make me and others happy.
• Two Advent and 1 12-Days of Christmas sent out. Seemed well received.

Social time: As much as current conditions allow; I’d like to keep up the attempt to be social. Maybe change one of the Family Zoom dinners each month to a host folks over for games, chatting, movies
• Hosted a couple get togethers. The one for Christmas got cancelled due to Mother Nature dumping a Blizzard on us for the weekend.

Brain Weasels: goal is to keep working on accepting that my Brain Weasels lie to me and that I have people who like and love me, that I am not alone, worthless and a waste of space.
• I tried on this one. And there were several times where friends gave me the mental, emotional, financial support that I needed this year. I do need to work on this more.

2021 To-Do List

Health: Re-committing to getting healthy with the new year. I still want to lose weight not out of vanity but for better movement and breathing ability. My new planner has a goals section for each month and habit tracking. My plan is 15-30 minutes of exercise at least every other day, and at least 64oz. of water a day (if not a full gallon).

* I ended the year 4.5 lbs. more than when I started the year. But lost 6.5 inches overall. So, I will call it kinda even

* Intentional Exercise: only 40 days this year. Barely 10%. Really can do better.

* Water: only hit the 64 oz/day goal 89 times this past year. That’s just shy of 25%. I could have done better

Employment: After spending most of 2020 unemployed, my goal is just to be employed. I started a new job at Thanksgiving and, if I’m being honest, I’m not happy. I spend 85% of my day bored out of my mind, waiting for my boss to call me to do some stupid task for him (push the button on the coffee maker next to his desk, order him a pair of shoes, etc.) and occasional type up a letter. For the job I’m being paid more than I should be, but I honestly feel like my skills are being wasted (and wasting away). So I will continue to look for something, but I will not look a gift horse in the mouth where I am.

* I did find another job but that lasted only one month before they restructured (they were a not-for-profit and funding left). Went back to job from hell. But things have changed. Still not finding it fulfilling but being treated better, been given more responsibility and a new title. Still waiting on the promised salary increase. I will not “actively” look for new but I do keep getting emails from Indeed and Linkedin and will apply if something they send sounds promising.

Hobbies and Activities (not exercise or SCA related): I am still hoping to break my tendency to sit in my chair in front of the TV playing stupid games on my phone or tablet. So my goal is to do more of the following:
1. Reading I have several reading challenges again picked out for 2021. But I have found that I tend to gravitate to audiobooks for when I’m in the car and the like, instead of actually reading as much as I used to. So I’m setting a goal of physically reading a minimum of20 minutes daily.
2. Photos I have had fun the last couple years doing different “photo a day” challenges so I intend to keep that up.
3. Crochet I have one blanket started and a couple more planned, so I need to set a goal to work on them. I was reminded how much I actually like doing it when I did a roll the dice crochet along when quarantine first started.
4. Messy Art There is just something cathartic about pouring paint onto something and watching the results unfold. I intend to keep doing so. I may look into putting some up on ebay or etsy to both make a bit of $$ and to get pieces out of my house.

* Reading: finished 77 books – many of them ones I never would have read if it were not for the various challenges I did.

* Photos: very much enjoyed these challenges

* Crochet: didn’t work on anything. Still have several projects I would like to get to.

* Messy Art: I made 62 pieces and a handful of ornaments. I sold a good handful between just posting on my FB wall and putting pieces out at the garage sale I held.

* I did a few SCA gift exchanges and did embroidery for them and really enjoyed the meditative aspect. May find more excuses to do more stitching.

House: Once again looking to slowly make home improvements so here’s the goals
1. Garage: I really, really, really need to get the garage resorted, stuff out and gone. Need to reach out to people who have stuff stored in there to see if they still want the stuff and if so, when can they come get it. I also need to see about getting replacement door opener button thingies.
5. Florida Room: get back to working to clean up and organize the room so I can maybe get the hospital bed and non-functioning electric wheelchair out and swap the computer desk out of my sister’s room and the Florida Room.
6. Upstairs Hall: I’d like to paint the walls (I have plenty of paint left from painting the living room in 2020) and pull out the orange rug from hell and refinish the floor like I did on the stairs.

* HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Yeah, none of that happened.

Ashley Boxes: They make me happy. I have two already planned and may add another.

* Sent out two. Both recipients seemed very happy and touched to receive them

Social time: As much as current conditions allow, I’d like to keep up the attempt to be social. Be it through Zoom, Facebook video chat, and even social distancing in the back yard.

* Did bi-weekly family Zoom nights and had several in person get-togethers with small groups of people. All are good for my soul

Brain Weasels: goal is to keep working on accepting that my Brain Weasels lie to me.

* Still an on-going battle. They are so easy to listen to.

2020 to-do list

1. Health - I did pretty good last year so will aim to continue At least one sports bottle worth of water a day. Daily walking was a bust so I’m going to aim for 30 minutes 3 times a week. I would like to continue with the weight loss and to try to be a size smaller by Pennsic - not out of vanity but just because it would help me move and breathe better. --- Well I did some for a while. Was doing really good when I was unemployed over the summer. I had managed to maintain my weight and had lost inches. But then I stopped caring and gained back all plus some. As I have seen people call it – the COVID Nineteen. I am ending the year up 5 pounds from where I started so I guess I’ll take that as a kinda even all things considered. Also, my primary doctor retired so that sent me looking for a new PCP. Thanks to a recommendation from a friend, I found a new health care practice and had my initial intake with a new Nurse practitioner. So far I like her a lot. I also got in to see an OB-GYN again and he actually answered a few things that I didn’t know I wondered about until he brought it up. So again, a win.

2. Employment - goal is now 8 years. I like it here. ---- HAHAHAHAHAHA. No one saw this year coming and sadly because of the pandemic, my position was eliminated. My boss fought to keep me but even with 7.5 years there, I was low man on the admin totem pole. I spent the summer looking. Lots of interviews but in the end only one offer. I took it. I can’t say I’m happy here but it’s employment. So there is that.

3. Arts and Crafts
A. Turn the boxes and fabric in my garage converted into scroll cases. ----I cut down boxes but that’s as far as I got.
B. I found this year that I my creative need was deeply satisfied by participating in various “Photo-a-day” challenges. I will keep this up as I can. ---- This I kept up with. I found it fun and satisfying. A couple times my photos were picked for “photo of the day” by the FB groups I’m in.
C. Find another project to do with my hands that I can do when "just sitting": either get back into Crocheting, embroidery, or maybe actually reading. I spend too much time playing on the tablet and watching TV --- I completed one full crocheted blanket and started another. I also made close to 600 masks since March. I only read/listened to 80 books this year (low considering the time I have since I wasn’t working). I did still spend too much time just sitting/playing on my tablet. I also made over 130 messy art pieces; some I have sold to friends. And I made several new dresses and t-shirts for myself.

4. SCA
A. Scribal : I want to continue to try to find the joy again. I also need to work on the research project that I've started. --- Yeah that didn’t happen. I have only made maybe 5 scrolls this past year. I looked at my backlog list but that’s as far as I got. Not having regular courts has not helped this.
B. Mentor : Continue working with the two active protégé’s that I have to help them achieve their SCA dreams. --- I have remained in contact with my two official and active protégés, though SCA activities have mostly ground to a halt. In January I took an Un-Protégé and we chat often.
C. For myself : I need to stop trying to figure out what others want of me. Either tell me or stop expecting things. I’m tired of guessing. I also want to put together a bid for Kingdom 12th Night 2021 --- Because of the pandemic the bid for 12th Night didn’t happen. Nothing’s really happening right now. And I hate to admit it that I am not bothered by that at all. I remain in touch with those people who I can. But, actual SCA activities have paused.

5. Reading Challenge - I enjoy this challenge immensely and have already started several books for this year picked out. I completed the PopSugar challenge and did all but 4 categories for the Around the Year one. I did not read/listen to as much as I have in the past, but the fact that I got 80 books done is an accomplishment.

6. House: I need to be more realistic about my goals
A. Front Hall - still want to strip and paint
---After years of saying I was going to do it… I did! With my sister’s help we spent a weekend and stripped and repainted the hall. I also painted the living room, made new curtains for both the living and family room AND ripped out the carpet and refinished the stairs.
B. Garage - better organize the stuff in there and contact folks who have things stored there to make arrangements bout getting their things out. ---- Yeah that was a big old NOPE. Even with cutting down boxes, nothing happened on this front.
C. general organization/decluttering – I’m thinking the dumping grounds in the Florida Room and maybe the Dining Room --- I tackled the area in front of the one door for the Florida Room, but that only lasted a month and then I had to empty out the laundry room due to getting new appliances, and I haven’t returned to get that moved again. Dining room is actually worse as is the spare room and my bedroom. Even though I had the time due to unemployment, the depression made it hard to deal with the clutter.

7. Ashley Boxes - these bring me joy. I am already well on my way to done for the 2020 boxes --- I sent out three. They seemed well received. Luckily, I had most of the items already purchased on Black Friday and Boxing Day 2019 or I would not have been able to afford to do it.

8. Social – I need to continue to push myself into social situations. It would be nice if I were not the only one (or feel like it) being the impetuous for things happening but oh well. I will continue to organize monthly family dinners. And see about hosting a quarterly game night. --- Well Covid made hitting this more difficult and easier at the same time. But thanks to Zoom, Chosen Family gets together every two weeks to continue Friday Family Dinner (just virtually), and I have hosted a couple open chat/game nights via zoom. So I’ll call it a win even if it doesn’t feel like it so much.

9. Brain Weasels – continue to fight the self-doubt and self-recrimination that tells me others are only “humoring my company” and the like. --- Wow, this year was hard for this. Especially job hunting. It has been hard to not feel worthy. And then my friends come out of the woodwork and help me. I had to fight the Brain Weasels twice this year and admit I needed financial help. When Lily Rose was diagnosed with an almost always terminal illness, my friends came through and helped me raise the $3500 needed to get the experimental medicine for her. Thanks to them, my little girl is in remission and is currently healthy. I also admitted that I just could not go any longer without a working oven (it had been almost 8 years since it worked) and two barely functional burners. So I asked friends to help me finance getting a new oven instead of sending me Christmas Gifts (if they had planned on doing so). Not only did they come to my help, but they also funded a new stove AND a new microwave (which my old one was 30+ years old). And another friend came and helped me install it. When I start to doubt my place and worth to my friends, I now have points in time to point to and say, “Brain Weasels need to shut up.”

Ashley Boxes: They make me happy. I have two already planned and may add another.

Social time: As much as current conditions allow, I’d like to keep up the attempt to be social. Be it through Zoom, Facebook video chat, and even social distancing in the back yard.

Brain Weasels: goal is to keep working on accepting that my Brain Weasels lie to me.

As I do every year I look back on the goals/To-Do list I had for the year and see what I accomplished and what I need to work on.

I never call the resolutions. Just goals and to-do lists.

Time to once again take stock of what happened last year and what I would like to do next year. As always, I do not call these resolutions... instead they are to-do lists.

It's time once again to see what I had on my to-do list for the year, think about it, and create next years.

2016 to-do list

1. Employment: stay employed. Let's go for 4 Not only did I make it past my 4 year anniversary, I had a kick-ass review.

2. Health: I joined a new gym. Initial intake is on 1/4/16. They have a pool. Hopefully i can work on getting fit if not get the weight under some resemblance of control well I joined. Went for a while but stopped. I have my membership on hold and I plan to restart it once I have a bit of spare money again. I also gained more weight. (sigh)

3. Arts and crafts: continue with the gift exchanges. They are making me happy to make things for others. Continued to do them. Not having as much fun as I did last year but it has gotten me out of my comfort zone with items I'm making.

4. A moment a day: try again to catalog a moment of each day this year. Yeah... no so much

5. Ashley Boxes: this past year I sent out two Ashley Advent boxes. I have two Advent Box recipients picked and am thinking of doing one for someone's birthday. I would also like to do random gifts throughout the year I did a birthday one and three Advent boxes. All seemed to go over well.

6. House and home:

1. Front hall -someday this will come off the list
Nope. I have the color picked out though
2. Oven/stove: will this be the year to get it looked at? I started to think about what I need to do to get someone to look at it.

3. Basement: start trying to get crap up and out. Maybe once a week take a grocery bag down, fill and toss not so much. But did get a couple boxes of Coast Guard Stuff out and to the person who can get it back to the Coast Guard.

4. Fence: this needs to be done... Wind storm recently made the side fence start to wobble. Need to consult handy friends and pick a weekend or two. again... nope

7. Reading Challenge: i joined a reading challenge with a co-worker. There are 41 categories, and while we agreed we could us a book for multiple categories, I am going to try to not duplicate if at all possible This one I did. I got 39 out of the 41 categories accomplished with unique reads and the remaining two were covered by books I read for the challenge, just other categories.

8. Great recipe experiment: no number. Just going to try to try something new from time to time. 3 done. It's more than none.

2017 to-do list

1. Health - one of my FB friends is challenging herself to walk 100 times for at least 30 minutes a time throughout the year. That comes to average about twice a week. I can do that. Even if it's going to the gym at work and doing 30 minutes after work twice a week. I also want to get the weight back down.

2. Employment - goal is now 5 years.

3. Arts and Crafts - I am going to continue with the gift exchanges. Perhaps not wait until almost the due date to get the gifts done

4. Scribal - I want to find the joy again. I've lost it recently. I have a bunch of backlogs to work on. Maybe I won't take fresh assignments for a while and work to get the backlogs done.

5. Reading Challenge - I enjoyed doing the 2016 one so I have signed up for the 2017 one. 40 to 52 categories to read (depending on if I go for the advanced list on top of the regular one). Still hope to do unique books for each entry.

6. House:
1. Front Hall
2. Oven
3. Fence
4. Basement
5. general organization/decluttering

7. A Question a Day - I got a book that is to encourage you to write. It has a unique topic for each day of the year. Going to hope to try to write a little entry each day.

8. Family - do what I can to support my sister in her search to find a sibling we just learned about.

9. Ashley Boxes - these bring me joy. So I have 3 recipients picked out for Advent boxes for the coming year and have started a birthday box for another.

baronessekat: (quiet)
Since everyone is doing it, I gotta follow the crowd.

I resolve:

To lose weight I say this every year but this year I mean it. To this end tomorrow starts Weight Watchers. I can do this. I did it before. And this time I'm going to meetings and everything. Maybe I can get rid of that load that I'm carryinga round.

attempt to keep things a bit cleaner around the house Like [livejournal.com profile] meirwen feel free to help on this one.

write more - maybe even finish one or two works in progress I got out there

Try to find a better headspace Whether this means finding a better job, getting sun when the depression hits, connect more with friends, do more photography, etc.

SCA want to become more involved. Events might not be as many I'd like but I can go to scribal again regularly, work on backlog scrolls, etc.

We shall see how it goes.
