The girls and I went to see Avenue Q last night. I really enjoyed it. There are times when I wish I could hear music they way they do. The way they talk about some pieces leaves me feeling like I'm sitting just outside something looking in and totally missing the experience.
Then, like last night, I'm really glad I don't. They talked about how the one performer seemed lacking and didn't hit words correctly. I didn't hear it. And as a result I think I enjoyed the performance a little more than they did.
What amazed me at the theater were two things. The number of people who had no clue about the show before seeing it. In fact one of my co-workers was going to see it Friday night and said she was taking her kid with her. I had to ask how old the child was and when she said 14.5 I gave her the dubious look. I warned her that this was NOT the muppets on broadway. The reactions of a lot of the audience told me they didn't even look up to get a synopsis let alone hear the music before hand. I don't mind the not hearing the music but for pete's sake, look up a synopsis. You might not then be shocked when there is a scene that included live puppet sex.
The second thing that amazed me was the clothing people wear to go to the theater. I had initially felt awkward when I ended up going wearing a brand new pair of jean, a nice shirt and blazer. I was raised that you just don't go to an evening performance in jeans. But compared to a lot of the audience, I was dressed up. I know it's Buffalo people and we are not the theater mecca that NYC or Toronto or LA is, but geeze, wear something nice. Clean jeans if you wear jeans. No madras golf shorts, no hoochie mamma shorts with fishnets. Really.
Tuesday is the funeral for my grandmother. My sister is helping me by providing the airline tickets for me to fly down and attend. I called my supervisor to verify I can get the time off. I need to call my boss today and let him know just so it's not a surprise when I leave at lunch tomorrow and am gone on Tuesday too. Today I need to go get a haircut today and get my nails done. I will have to go to someone not my regular girl but I won't have a chance to go to her before my flight on Monday and my nails really need to be done.
Tonight I have to pack for the flight. Gotta figure out what I'm going to wear to the funeral. I think I hate that more than actually going to funerals.
