My rating: 4 of 5 stars
3.5 but I rounded up.
Approaching this book as an adult in the 21st Century brings a completely different attitude to this book than had I read this book when I was a child in the 1970's or when the book was published in the early 20th century.
As an adult, I kept thinking "dear sweet lord, that child needs a sound spanking" and "These parents should be arrested" and the like. Not to mention the utter violence of the story and the WILDLY racist attitudes, especially to the "Red Skins".
But to be fair, as a child in the 1970's, upon seeing both the Disney cartoon and the Mary Martin theater performance on TV, I had very similar attitudes.
I suppose for certain children, this book is enjoyable. Personally, I'm glad I don't have kids so I don't have to determine if I would let them read this or watch any of the movies. But, I'm a stodgy old person.
for me, the best part of the whole thing was Jim Dayle's reading. I love his voice.
