About half this book takes place in space, so I am counting it for this category.
I came to this book a couple years after having seen the first couple seasons of the TV show based upon this. That being said, I still really like the premise of the story and did like some of the things that were different in the book than what was in the show.
300 years ago, Earth experienced the cataclysm... a nuclear detonation that made the planet inhospitable to human life. Humans evacuated in spacecrafts that joined together as a colony and orbited the planet. Because of limited space and resources, there is one punishment for breaking the law... death. Unless the one committing the crime is under 18. In that case they are put in confinement until their 18th birthday, retried and if found rehabilitated returned to society. If not, death.
Clarke was convicted of treason for hiding information on a project her scientist parents were working on. Bellamy's mother was convicted of violating the reproduction law of only one child and his younger sister, Octavia, was sent to a care facility - where she was convicted of theft. Glass, was an unwed teenager who experienced an unapproved pregnancy. Wells, son of the colony's commander, is in love with Clarke.
What they do not know is that the colony is dying. Resources, and the ship itself is rapidly breaking down. So the government decides to send 100 youthful offenders back to Earth to see if it's safe for humans to return. Wells, having heard of the plan, commits a crime so he can be on the shuttle to be with Clarke, Bellamy won't let his sister go alone, so he forces himself onto the shuttle. Glass, manages to escape before it takes off.
But now these teens need to survives in a land they have never been, in an environment totally alien to what they are used to, as well as dealing with being a small group of convicted criminals with HUGE personality issues.
I do plan on continuing the book series, but I have to say that if I was not invested because of the show, I am not very sure I would.
