My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Personal note: Author is a friend of mine.
Actually this would be a 2.5.
I can see how others would like this book. I was just a bit lost at times, but I think that is because I found that I honestly was not engaged with the reader throughout most of the book. His voice tended to lull me into zoning out and I had to fight to pay attention due to his reading style. He vary rarely varied his voice, pitch, speed, emotion throughout this book. And many of his women's voiced sounded more like 80 year old men (though the description of the woman was fair and young. I honestly think I would have enjoyed the book more (not much but more) had I actually read the book myself.
The story itself was lackluster. I have spoken to the author and had to ask if this was a book I was supposed to have read another trilogy or something first because I felt like I was missing a HUGE amount of world building. He said no, this was his first book and that the lack of world building until more than 1/2 way through was something he address in future projects as that was a criticism he had received on this book
I can't say what this story was really about. There was some kind of political intrigue revolving around the ruling of some town in a country that didn't have much of a name and the main character had been swept up into helping to solve a kidnapping and possible murder because he was an outsider and would have no political bone in the fight.
The book ended and it took me a while to remember who anyone was and actually who was the bad guy.
While I personally adore the author as a friend, I cannot say that I will be reading any more of his books. Though I might buy some just to support a self published author.
