My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Leningrad the summer that the USSR joins the war. Tatiana is 17 and working to help support her family. Walking home from work one day she meets Alexander, a handsome 23 year old Soviet Army soldier. They seem to instantly be drawn to each other.
But it seems that the universe keeps trying to keep them from being together. The war - Tatiana's family - Alexander's "Friends". The two struggle with dealing with their love for each other while the rest of the world falls apart.

Ok, I can see how others would love this book. Personally I kept finding myself rolling my eyes. Tatiana is a "young" 17 and is a person that I can only call a "selfish subservient". Constantly wanting to make others happy but still only doing what she wants. Alexander is a domineering selfish asshole with a jealous streak wider than the Volga River.
Personally I wanted to reach in and smack the ever living begeesus out of both of them.
This is the first in a trilogy and I honestly do not care enough about any of the characters to move to the next book. That's not to say that it's a bad book. Just not my kind of book
