really 3.5
I had never heard of Annie F. Downs prior to this book. Part of me wishes I had only because I would have been prepared for how strong her Christian Faith is (not that that's a bad thing) as it took me a little by surprise. But I appreciated her commitment to her faith and it wasn't preachy. It's just part of who she is.
That being said this book is a look at things we all need in life, especially during these unprecedented times of COVID. Mostly finding the joy in trying new things. This is near and dear to my heart. Find the fun.
American culture especially has driven into our heads that if you are not immediately good at it, don't bother. But here she talks about that there is something special about being an amateur. That it's OK to try new things. Not everyone has to be a Mozart of Monet, it's OK to just make noise or color outside the lines. Does it bring you joy? Are you having fun? Is it hurting anyone? IF yes, yes, and no - then go for it. Be the amateur. Find a hobby that is more than scrolling social media. as she say - Scrolling is not a hobby.
She also talks about finding love. Not the romantic emotional type of love. But the love that brings joy. It's ok to fall in love with country music if it makes you happy. Time of evening where the sky is all pink and purple with touches of indigo around the edges - adore it. Love is what makes us human. Fall in love.
She often refers to how humans are constantly "searching to return to Eden" - that place where we felt safe, and happy and love. And it's up to us as humans to find our own Eden.

This is a quick listen (just over 5ish hours) and if you can deal with her talking about her faith, I would recommend the book.
