Ninth House (Alex Stern, #1)Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Galaxy "Alex" Stern is a freshman at Yale and part of one of the Nine Ancient Houses - secret societies who all practice magic for the betterment of their members. Alex is part of the House that oversees and polices the others to make sure that rituals and activities to no go wrong and leak into the real world. Add to that, she has the innate ability to see ghosts.

Alex has to deal with being a fish out of water at Yale (being a High School drop-out from the streets), her student mentor missing and presumed dead, and then a ritual she was monitoring goes strangely and a town girl ends up dead.

She finds herself trying to solve the girl's murder, find her mentor and somehow pass the semester - all while someone is out there trying to kill her and a local ghost haunts her in an attempt to solve his death.

++++

This was a long dense book but I found myself wanting to keep returning to it to find out what was coming next.

I have not read any of the author's YA books, and I do not know if I want to. BUT honestly I cannot wait for the next book in this new series.
