Ponderings of a fevered mind

I had a thought last weekend and it solidified more yesterday.
Over the weekend we watched several episodes of Fraggle Rock. I got to watching the iconographic nature of each of the Fraggles and the like. You know... the reluctant Hero (Gobo). The wacky side-kick (Wimbly). The "Doom and gloom" naysayer (Boober). The airy idealist (Mokey). The High Adventurer (Red). The wise hermit (The Trash Heap). Etc.
Yesterday I re-watched the first DVD of Firefly. And like Fraggle Rock we have the iconography characters. The Reluctant Hero (Mal). The Wacky side-kick (Wash). the airy idealist (Kaylee). The High Adventurer (Zoe). The Wise Hermit (Book).
But what really struck me was the similarity of Wash and Wimbly. Even down to the buggy eyes, wierd haircut and hawaiian shirts, and their names both start with W.
So I almost want to write to Joss and ask if he really did base Wash on Wimbly Fraggle.
