Glad you turned it off. I used an old WOOD rake handle. Helpful hint for the wet heavy snow... spray some cooking oil (like pam) inside the shoot before you start. It makes the snow stick less and it's ok for the earth. The other thing is to slow down a little bit. If you take smaller paths like only fill 1/2 the auger it works better in the heavy stuff.
