My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I had been wanting to read Jack Reacher for a couple years now. Pretty much since the first movie came out and I heard friends complaining of it being wrongly cast for the part of Jack. It was then that I decided I wanted to read at least one book before I saw any of the movies, preferably the first book.
I finally got my hands on the first book. And I totally understand what my friends were saying. Jack Reacher is supposed to be 210 lbs., roughly 6'6" tall. Yeah... so not Tom Cruise.
That being said, I totally understand why this franchise has taken off and it now contains something like 20 books. The pacing was good and it was a fairly easy read. I can't say that I found any of the characters complicated and the plot was rather predictable. I called a lot of who was "bad guys" and found myself saying "well... he's gonna die" fairly often. I did not try to figure out the who-done-it and why, but it was rather easy to see what was coming in most places.
All in all, while I will not be actively seeking the next book in the series (though I've been told by those who are aficionados that you do not have to read them in order), should another cross my path for some reason, I will not walk away from it.
And having read the first book... yeah gonna pass on the movies.
