I've been busy all day but I look at the piles of files on my desk and feel like I accomplished nothing. I have half an hour before it's time to go home and yes, I could get one more file open. And that would be one more file I don't have to do tomorrow. But why bother?
And yes, I have spoken about how I am the type to want to get my desk clear before I go home, but today I look at all the things I'm waiting on someone else to do their job so I can do mine and find myself discouraged.
Other people seem to not take pride in their work. Other people seem to take forever and a day to take care of things. Why do I bother pushing myself to get one more thing done when all it will do is sit and wait because someone else has to do something before I can do the next step.
I have 13 files in the bin labeled "Waiting on tax receipts". That means I'm waiting for the girl who orders the tax searches on the property we are trying to sell to actually call up a town/city/village/what-have-you and order a copy of any outstanding taxes on the property. Once she does that I can move the file into the "Waiting for the tax bills" pile. Yes it's just moving from one pile to another while waiting for someone else to do their job, but at least by being able to move from one pile to another, BUT I have managed to do one more step in my job. Because once I get the tax bills, I get to take the file off my desk completely and give it to someone else along the chain to do whatever their job is.
But those 13 in the "Waiting for tax receipts" have filled actually two bins. Do I dare process any of the six that are waiting to be opened so they can teeter in the bins with their brethren?
And what about the six that are in the "Waiting for something so can be opened" bin? Those are just waiting for someone else to send me some piece of paper so I can move it to my "To be opened bin". Or the 5 that are sitting in the "Files we received notice of but no contract yet" bin?
Of the six bins that sit on my desk, I only have control over one. My desk looks like a war zone because I have to wait for others.
Control freak... maybe. But I hate it when I get asked "What's the status of X property" and all I can say is "Waiting".
Waiting, waiting, waiting.
So thus goes the days of my life.
