(Based on a fairy tale)
The Bone Spindle by Leslie Vedder
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
There are stories told of a lost Kingdom where the Prince was cursed to sleep until true love wakes him and restores the magical kingdom.
Fi is a bookish adventure and Shane is a tough as nails treasure hunter. Together the two young women team up to find the lost kingdom. Little did they expect that Fi was the fated one to wake Prince Briar Rose.
But when Fi accidentally gets pricked by the very same bone spindle that sent the Prince to sleep she becomes magically connected to him and is able to communicate with his sleeping spirit.
Now the girls need to travel to a distant land, fight off monsters, Witch Hunters, vengeful witches AND wake the Prince without getting killed themselves.
+++++
I am leery of "fairy tale re-imaginings", but I actually really liked this YA, genderbending retelling of Sleeping Beauty. The pace of the story was good, the characters were enjoyable and, even though you knew the Prince would be woken, I wanted to see how it would happen.
And there was an ending but an open one that made it so that if you wanted to end with this book you can, but with just enough intrigue to want to go to the next book and see how things work out. I will certainly be looking to get book #2 sometime later in the year.
