Well, apparently I've been driving around without front breaks, and the back breaks were almost shot.

I need three tires replaced

an alighment needs to be done and they are now running the diagnostic on what is causing the ABS light to come on sometimes.

Needing new brakes might trigger the ABS light... Wow; better to find out you need brakes this way.

Having discovered I needed brakes the 'other' way (thankfully at low speed, and the emergency brake still worked), I completely agree.

the mechanic shop my family has been going to for years.

They don't try to sell me stuff that I dont' need. Which is good and they are pretty good about saying "while this doesn't need X right now... plese consider getting it taken care of in the next couple months".
