I have a scribal assignment. Grant level.

I'm toying with Italian White Vine style or maybe something from the Visconti Hours. No the recipient is not Italian but that's what I'm leaning towards.

But my general question is... what style do you like in scrolls? (technical terms not needed)

Color me curious

Well, I have two, one of which is blotted and the scribe apologized. I just find scrolls amazing.

I honestly don't have a favorite. I'm currently all about Cleves and the Psalter of de Lisle because that's what I'm primarily working in. De Lisle's "circle of sevens" or whatever it's called (can't remember) is incredible for the amount of detail and meaning that can be put into it. THAT's what gets to me: a scroll filled with all kinds of little add-ons and private messages throughout the illumination.

Hmmmm....tough call. I'm guessing Viscounty. Lots of people like Viscounty. I personally am not fond of it but I think I'm in the minority. I know! How about a squash bug scroll with snails!!!! Escargot, no? hehehehehe I have the squash bug (or would that be squashed snail?) scroll you made for me hanging up in my living room right over the TV so I look at it often. :-] I still tell people the story about the scroll and how you made it and got it to the event. Hehehehehe

Believe it or not, I was actually thinking about Italian White Vine scrolls in the shower this morning. I've seen one done where the vines were gilded with silver and with time, the silver tarnished and turned black. It looked really cool and one of these days I want to try and do that.

Has more to do with layout that style. I like either pretty plain scrolls (one gorgeous capital and then the words, no border art), or the "facing page" style with the art contained in one half and words in the other. My Viscounty looks like that, and, of course, the County book.

The Book of Hours/Majewski (sp) pages with a detailed picture in the top half with words below is okay. That's what my Ducal scroll is, because I wanted squashed bug and a portrait.

I hate fussy borders (surround style). Doesn't matter if it's Italian, French, Celtic, German, Russian...yuck.
