Killing Time with Reviews
Jul. 25th, 2006 04:20 pmI finished a book last night. "Don of the Dead" by Casey Daniels. If you want hardcore indepth and intense mystery... don't get this book. HOwever, I picked it up because it sounded kinda tongue in cheek and fun. And that's pretty much what I got. Pepper Martin is a down on her luck girl who at one time was living the good life. But then Doctor daddy committed insurance fraud and ended up in jail and mom went into social hiding, leaving Pepper to fend for herself. The only job Pepper could get was as a tour guide in a cemetary. All was going good until she tripped and cracked her noggin on a tombstone and started being able to see the ghost of one of Clevelands most notorious mob bosses. Gus, the mob ghost, wants Pepper to help find out who killed him so he can move on. Of course Pepper would rather be doing anything but helping Gus, but she ends up helping him out.
I found Pepper rather much a ditz and clueless. But I think that's how the author wanted her to come across. I think I overpaid for the book at $6.99 + tax. But it was fun and sassy. I can't decide though if I will try to find "The Chick and the Dead" (the sequal) when it comes out or not. But it was entertaining.
The second review is of Monster House. We went to go see it on Friday at the drive in. While I enjoyed the movie a lot, this is not, in my opinion, a children's movie. I would say no younger than a 'Tween. It had all the feel of Goonies and Stand By Me in animated format. We sat there looking at the two male lead characters, DJ and Chowder and seeing all the resemblances to Mikey, Chunk and Mouth from Goonies. The girl was your stereotypical brainy rich girl caught along for the ride and adventure. I liked the animation style, CGI that is not so realistic that you can't tell it's animated. It was very stylized and perfect for the story of the movie. Across the street from DJ lives old man Nebercracker who seems to hate kids and drives them off and takes their toys if they land on the property. Chowder's brand new basketball lands on Nebercracker's front yard and when they go to get it, Nebercracker comes out and an altercation ensues causing the old man to fall over and have to be sent out by ambulance. DJ is convinced he's killed the man. Then when the house starts acting strange and attacking people, he and Chowder become convinced the house is haunted by the ghost of Nebercracker. The rest of the movie is dark and deals with the boys and the young girl trying to exorcise the house of the ghost of Nebercracker and trying to stay alive long enough to go trick or treating that night.
Like I said, dark and very early 80's teen adventure/finding yourself movie. And definately NOT a kids film.
