Today's the first day in several where the office has been more or less "full" because my little corner of the word has been experiencing the Polar Vortex and Blizzard conditions with travel bans all over the place.
I commented to a male coworker that I found that when the office was only half staffed to have a creepier feel than when I'm the only one here on a weekend (with maybe a Production Supervisor wandering by doing a status of the plant check) or when there are a lot of folks here. He was like "really?" I nodded. I said I found myself more hyper-aware when there was a small handful of people than when it's empty or when fully staffed.
He didn't see it. That's when I went "that's because you're a guy".
I work in a predominately male company (we are a manufacturing plant afterall) and when we are fully staffed there are other women around. When I'm by myself on the floor, I can't say why but I'm not as "on edge" as when there are just a small handful of people (mostly males) around. Maybe it is the survival instinct monkey brain of "I can probably take/escape just one guy but a group of them... not likely".
Not that I have ever felt unsafe with my coworkers. If I did, I certainly would not still be working here. And lord knows I'm far from anything "girly".
Perhaps it's all the stuff lately on FaceBook about "if you're a white, cis-male you've probably never had to..." in regards to being attacked, always aware, etc. I hadn't noticed it before, but I am more aware of it now.
Just something that's been noodling in the back of my brain most of the day
