[note - I hate the way this prompt is phrased. Fat is derogatory. I would say "plus sized"]
Spoiler Alert by Olivia Dade
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
really 2.5 stars but I rounded up.
April is a geologist living a hidden life: she is a diehard fan of the books and TV show "Gods at the Gates" and she cosplays and writes fanfiction. What she's been keeping from her online friends is that she is a plus-sized woman who has lived her whole life being belittled for the fact that she is not slender.
Marcus is also living multiple lives. Professionally he plays Aeneas on the TV show "Gods at the Gates", his public persona is that of a beautiful but dimwitted actor (what he calls the "beautiful golden retriever") and privately, he expresses his frustrations with what the writers and producers of the show are doing with his and other characters by writing fanfiction.
April decides that it's time to stop hiding who she is and posts a picture of her in her GoG cosplay online and the trolls come out in force. Marcus calls the trolls out by asking April on a date.
When they meet Marcus learns that April is a friend he's had online for two years through the fanfiction community. But he doesn't dare tell her because his career could be ruined if it is ever found out that he writes "protest fanfic".
The two quickly start dating, and supporting each other through their difficulties - her acceptance by society and his hiding that he is dyslexic and not as stupid as he pretends to be. But Marcus needs to figure how when and how to tell April about the fact that they've been friends longer than she suspects.
+++++
This story was OK. But SPOILER ALERT! it is such a thinly veiled "Game of Thrones" Mary-Sue/self-immersion story that it kinda detracts from anything else.
I like that there is a strong body positivity message, that it stresses that being dyslexic doesn't make you stupid.
But the sex scenes were rather meh. I didn't not find them stimulating in the least and honestly wish they had been left out.
This could have been a good cozy romance rather than a mediocre steamy story.
