The topic that was given to me to write about this past week was "Warehouse".

So I give to you a small glimpse into the life of my RPG character Mouse.

It didn’t look like much - just a run-down building in a run-down part of the worst section of the city. Head to dock 45 turn left, go down two blocks and look to your right.

There behind the pallets of garbage, if you could fight your way past the feral alley cats, you found her door. But you wouldn’t go looking for her. No one did. And that was just fine by her.

She had been living there since she was 6, maybe 7 years old. Age is rather an abstract concept to a girl who couldn’t remember her birth name or parents. For what she could remember of her childhood, she lived in the warehouse with Jimmy.

Over the years they had made the run-down building in a run-down part of the worst section of the city theirs. With things they had scrounged, found or creatively borrowed, they had turned the old warehouse into their home. She loved living there with him. Nothing could go wrong as long as they were together. Or so she had thought.

Jimmy had been her protector, her big brother, her best friend. When she was little, he made the sun rise and set. He named her Mouse. He taught her how to survive the life of a Street Rat. Jimmy was the one who realized that she would always be small in stature and have child-like looks. He was the one who realized that she would need more than just physical strength to protect herself.

The only problem she ever saw about Jimmy was that he believed the stories he had told about himself. He was the greatest Rat in all the city; nothing could stop him. The law couldn’t catch him, no safe or lock could keep him out, no pocket was unpickable. But one fateful day, when she had been around 12, Jimmy decided to try to nick the pocket of someone more challenging.

He forgot the two most important rules of being a Rat. Rule Number One: DON’T DIE. Rule number two: leave the mages the F alone. And because he failed to remember rule number two, he failed rule number one.

Suddenly she was alone in the world. But she took the skills he had taught her and continued to survive. And every night, she would return to the run-down building in a run-down part of the worst section of the city. She continued to live to prove that Jimmy had taught her well.

And someday, when she would have to leave the run-down building in a run-down part of the worst section of the city, wherever she lived might be “where she lived”, but, for all her life, that warehouse off dock 45 would forever remain in her mind “Mouse House”.
