I got my challenge for this week this morning and was instantly inspired. The topic I was given was "No."

I give you a glimpse into the Athrendaas-Whalesbane household in Viridia.

She stood there blinking down at the child. He could not have just said what she thought she heard.

“What did ye jist say ta me?” she demanded firmly.

Her three-year-old son stood there, chin raised in defiance, with that gleam in his eye. Kitteran knew that gleam well. Jason’s father had that same look. That one that he used when testing her boundaries and being a general pain in the ass.

Jason met her gaze and repeated himself. “No.”

Kitt closed her eyes and counted to 10 in the four different languages she knew and fought back not to pick the child up, physically or magically, and shake him. She had to remind herself that it was normal for his age to test. And after having helped raise a handful of her own siblings and close cousins, not to mention being a teacher for close to 20 years, she should know all too well about Littles testing boundaries.

She folded her arms over her chest and glared down at her son. “I ain’t gonna ask ye ag’in. Put yer toys away so ye kin git ready fer bed.”

Jason looked at her and shook his head again. “No,” he said just as firmly and sat down and began to play with his toy soldiers again.

Suppressing a sigh, she stepped forward, picked Jason up by the upper arm and delivered five firm swats to his rear.

He looked at her in total surprise. It was obvious the child had thought that he could win his mother over with his cute smile, playful gleam and childish antics. But she knew that he had to learn that looks only got you so far, and she was not someone who would be charmed by her own child so easily.

Jason looked across the living room to look to his father. Pelton, sat quietly on the sofa, working on a project, looking as if he was ignoring the whole thing. The boy had to learn not to call on his father for every little battle either.

Kitt stood there, face impassive as the tears started. It was a rather impressive display. Lower lip started to quiver slightly, the eyes got watery, then big huge tears slowly rolled down his cheek and the sobbing started. She knew it was mostly show. She didn’t hit him hard at all. Just enough to make him feel it through the diaper and maybe the last one left a hint of a sting.

“I told ye ta pick up yer toys,” She said firmly. When he hesitated she made a motion to step forward again. This time he quickly scrambled to his feet and collected up his toys and put them in the box off to the side of the room.

When he was done she helped him upstairs and helped him wash up and get ready for bed. She made all the reassuring motions and sounds to help let him know that Momma still loved him and it would all be okay in the morning.

After Jason was tucked in bed, curled up with his dog Argo, and sound asleep, she returned to the living room and flopped down on the sofa next to Pel.

“That was interesting,” he observed.

She shrugged. “Jist a battle of wills. And he needs ta learn when I ask him ta do som’t’in’. I mean it. And defiance will be bet with a good spankin’. A swat on the rear ne’er hurt no-ones in the long runs.” She turned her head to look at her husband. “Thank ye fer not comin’ ta his rescue or defense.”

He shrugged. “Like you said, he needs to learn.”

They sat together in comfortable silence for most of the evening, just enjoying each other’s company. She graded papers and he worked on some project for the Garvey.

After a few hours she put the papers away and rose. She turned to her husband with a smile.

“Ye gonna put yer stuff away an’ git ready fer bed?”

She knew she was in trouble when he looked up at her and gave her the Whalesbane smile.

“No.” he said grinning.

This time the no was met with a return grin.

I'm teamed up with another person and we challenge each other with random topics once a week just to get us actually writing rather than saying we are going to write.

I started posting the ones I gave him here so others could join in if they wanted.

You're welcome to join in with the challenges I post.
