The interview game

1. Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me."
2. I respond by asking you five personal questions so I can get to know you better! If I already know you well, expect the questions may be a little more intimate!
3. You will update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
4. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the post.
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.
1. Having worked so closely with a number of reigns and been able to see the pros and cons for those in charge, would you at this point prefer the possibility of being Queen of reign or to be part of the support staff of a reign?
I would like the opportunity to actually sit the throne at some point. I actually feel that there should be a requirement that in order to sit the throne you have to have worked as more than a “show up at an event and maybe volunteer to help” retainer first.
I know the stress put on the support staff and know better than to think, as some people do, that reigns are “fun”. It’s lots of hard work.
That being said, while I would like to be queen for the experience and stuff, I am perfectly content being support staff for the right set of royals.
2. You have beautiful execution with illumination. Did you begin your scribal career with a background in art or were your talents brought forth with training in the SCA?
I have a background in photography. I was a competitive semi-professional black and white photographer for years.
For actual graphic/painting/drawing art, the most background I have is 8th grade art class. However, my father was a graphic artist and people kept saying I had an “artistic eye”
3. You have some very tenacious and "takes no prisoners" aspects to your personality. Have you ever explored unleashing that part of yourself on the combat field with fencing or rattan?
I used to be heavy into SCA fencing. 4 practices a week and a tourney/event on Saturdays. I had been Thescorre’s fencing champion and was doing quite a bit of actual teaching beginning fencing.
Then I blew out my ankle. When I finally came back after having to let it recover for 6 months, I went back to practice with the “I just need to get back into shape” statements but those that were there kept trying to “teach me how to fence”. I got frustrated and left the sport. Then I gained weight.
I had hoped to get back into fencing this summer, now that I have lost the weight. However, events have transpired against me with having to deal with my mother’s estate and moving and stuff.
So maybe next year.
4. Tell me one opportunity or aspiration in life that you had wanted but just did not materialize for you (at least not yet).
I always wanted to be a photojournalist for National Geographic. I contacted them my senior year of high school to ask for what I should take in college to better help me get a job. I took anthropology, a couple photo classes and one journalism class when I didn’t hear back. It wasn’t until 2 months before the end of my senior year that I heard anything and by then it was too late to do anything.
But it is something I had wanted and do dream of.
The other thing would be a forensic anthropologist. This is something I wanted to be LONG before CSI or Cold Case or any of those forensic shows that suddenly sprang up on TV. But I need a lot more schooling for it that I have neither the time or money for.
5. Which actress or celebrity would you pick to play the role of you in the movie of your life?
Jodi Foster. It’s not her fault she generally picks crappy movies. She’s a great actress and I love her sense of humor. And she’s the right height.

Date: 2007-03-22 05:37 pm (UTC)2. What A&S SCA thing, other than the one you got your laurel in, would you like to attempt?
3. Why do you want to fence?
4. If you had unlimited funds and unlimited time, where would you go on vacation and why?
5. What was the last thing you did to pamper yourself?
As for fencing, I haven't actually picked up a sword of any kind other than to carry Morguhn's in over 10 years. I don't know how good I would be. But I can help with basic things like foot work.

Date: 2007-03-22 08:12 pm (UTC)1. What is your favorite curse word and why?
I tend to make up curse words when I'm truly pissed at something, so I can't say that any one curse word is truly my "favorite". If I'm being typical and boring, "fuck" seems to be my most versatile one. But I can't say that I have a "favorite", per se.
2. Would you make me an Edmund Original someday?
Yes. How period do you want it, and what period/culture do you want?
3. Why do you want to fight in crown?
Multiple reasons, I suppose. I stopped feeling like I had to prove something to myself in this regard (fighting) years ago, but maybe there is still part of me that needs to prove relevancy. There are other reasons that are more personal... and I will share them with you, if you wish, but not here.
4. If you had unlimited funds and unlimited time, where would you go on vacation and why?
Easy. I'd buy a very large boat, make all of my closest friends take two years off work, and sale us all around the world... stopping on as many coasts as possible.
5. What was the last thing you did to pamper yourself?
I don't honestly know. I do small things here and there (buy myself a book or DVD), but nothing big that I would consider "pampering". Not like I used to, anyway. I think I may be entitled to some good pampering, in the near future!! :)

Date: 2007-03-25 07:09 pm (UTC)1. What is your favorite curse word and why?
I think it would be fuck. You can use fuck so many ways and in so many situations. It is a very versatile word.
2. What A&S SCA thing, other than the one you got your laurel in, would you like to attempt?
I would like to try my hand at brewing and/or vinting.
3. Tell me one guilty pleasure of yours.
Cheesecake.
4. If you had unlimited funds and unlimited time, where would you go on vacation and why?
Probably go to Europe and see all the things I didn't get to see when I was stationed over there.
5. What was the last thing you did to pamper yourself?
Err, not sure if I ever did anything to pamper myself...

Re: Not very original with making up questions
Date: 2007-03-22 07:54 pm (UTC)Actually, I don't like any of them, although I do use them far to frequently. If I had to pick one, it would be "damn" because it can be used in such an amusing fashion so easily from "Damn you, you killed Kenny" to the far better, "Damn! We're in a tight spot."
2. What made you become a fencer?
hmmm... long story. How do I sum it up briefly and leave out the stupid parts?
The idea of fencing was plugged into my head by my high school Art teacher back in the 10th grade. Some time after graduation, I found myself in the possession of some fencing gear and sought him out for lessons. This only went so far because he was a busy professional artist, and there was no one else around to fence. I satisfied myself with watching "Scaramouche" and other such films until gaining exposure to the SCA. Fencing was my avenue to participating. When marriage problems caused me to take a year long hiatus, I returned to attend a shire meeting. At the meeting, someone new asked, "Who do we talk to about fencing?" Everyone turned and pointed at me as the most experienced fencer in the shire, a guy with one authorization and one failed tournament under his belt. I was informed that they wanted me to be the fencing marshal, so I went looking for training, which meant training in rules, fencing, training others in rules and fencing... It was a evil constant never-ending vicious cycle of learning, training, and teaching and learning, training, and teaching and learning, training, and teaching... It just has never stopped. Not that I mind any since I love it. In the process, I have met such amazing people who encouraged me so very much from Danulf to Keyard to Meirwen and more.
I have had to credit my enjoyment and success with my approach of a greater desire to fence well as opposed to a desire to win and also the fact that I have regularly pushed myself harder for the sake of helping others instead of for the sake of seeking personal honors. It's like that Babylon 5 Vorlon thing of "doing things for the right reasons or the result will be impure."
3. Tell me one guilty pleasure of yours.
Coca-Cola ...with a Mounds bar chaser.
4. If you had unlimited funds and unlimited time, where would you go on vacation and why?
My vacation would begin with retirement. It would then fall into traveling about with constant training and competition for a time before continuing in adventure as a professional student. Where? Where not would be easier to answer. NOT inside Mt. Vesuvius.
I would love to visit the Minoan ruins on Crete and Santorini and Agamemnon's fortress Mycenae .
5. What was the last thing you did to pamper yourself?
I asked Toni to make lunch for me. (Yes, that was pampering me. It is usually me doing all of the cooking.)

Date: 2007-03-26 08:03 pm (UTC)I grew up with a Marine, consequently, I have a fairly full repertoire of colorful metaphors. My favorite tho? Frak. Why? Mostly because I could get away with it. I picked it up in '78 and have been using it ever since. I could always use it in front of authority figures and dodge "castigation" because "Hey..they use it on TV." Of course, now that BSG is in vogue again, we hear it a lot more often. But in 20 years, when BSG is forgotten again, I'll still be usin' it. :)
2. You have said you would fight in crown again. Why?
Because there are ladies I'd like to see as Queen. :)
Ok, that's the easy answer. From a totally selfish point of view, because it's a way I can give back in a way that I *feel* like I'm giving back. I have to admit, being able to help things get done that have languished for some time... well.. yeah. That. Another part is that the Crown shouldn't be a cakewalk. Earning that responsibility should be something that comes with sacrifice of body and dedication of soul. Being in the tourney lets me be a part and have some determination in that. Sure, I have to be on the same path with the same intent*, but if I can be a part of that decision, I believe I owe it to the Kingdom. *(for those following along at home, I also understand the need for a partner and family/household with the same dedication.)
There are other reasons, but they're best shared over a bottle of something. Opening bid is 2 ciders. :)
3. Tell me one guilty pleasure of yours.
You already know about theMistress.. I'd have to say either "the food channel," "BBCA," or "The Knife Show"..but only when Shelia's on. I put it on and listen to the accents. I'm a hedonist for sound and the formation of language, especially by the female voice. There's a richness in sound that's just.... mmm. I could sit and just listen for hours to different accents and voices. I have a special fondness for trilled consonants and deeper vowels. Gaelic for instance. Hard to find that.
4. If you had unlimited funds and unlimited time, where would you take your family to go on vacation and why?
Unlimited funds and time = retirement! And THAT would entail .... well, that's not the question. :) In the spirit of the intent, that being a temporary escape from the mundane, I'd pack up the entire family for a tour of Europe. Most of the family have a desire to see some part of it, and it's the kind of adventure that's best shared.
5. What was the last thing you did to pamper yourself?
Seriously. http://www.clanoldcastle.com/photos/np/p1.gif The timing of the question made that answer easy.
