She stood on the bridge of her new home and gazed out of the window, her eyes dancing with amazement and delight.
The experience was exciting and scary all at the same time. She hadn’t lied when she told the captain that she ain’t never been up in a ship before. But that didn’t stop her from signing on as soon as her folks gave their blessings. The grin on her face was so huge it made her face ache, but that didn’t make is fade any less.
“So what do you think?” the pilot… Wash he had said his name was… asked.
“It’s so big. It’s beautiful,” she said, her eyes never leaving the vista. “Ain’t like anything I ever could imagine.”
She didn’t need to look to know he was smiling too. “That it is, beautiful and big. And there is nothing else like it. So full of wonders, possibilities and peace.”
She nodded. “It’s not like what I expected. It’s just…” she struggled to find the words. “Why do they call it ‘The Black’?”
“Well,” he said with a chuckle, “cuz it is. Black that is. Just look. Would be kinda silly to call it ‘The Red’ or ‘The Green’ now wouldn’t it?”
“But calling it ‘The Black’ says it’s all dark and forebodin’. It ain’t. Look at all the stars. It’s too light out to be ‘black’.”
When he didn’t say anything she turned around to look at him. He was blinking at her. “Huh, I never thought of it that way. But I suppose we need to still call it “The Black” or no one would know what we were talking about if we started saying “The Light”.”
She just chuckled. “You’re funny.”
He shrugged and she turned back to happily look at “The Light”.
