OK, the vacuum that mom had, while still working, is dying. I figured I would need a new one eventually. I mean I have mostly wall-to-wall in the Doma and three cats (one long hair and two tabbys that shed at the drop of a hat). But as I"m cleaning for the weekend, even after changing the bag, I'm noticing it's not picking up as good as it should/used to.

So my question, dear readers is...

Any recommendations for what to get?

I"m seriously thinking of saving up for a dyson with Heppa filters. Cats + asthmatic = dyson right?

Anyone have any other suggestions for a good, well built, bagless upright?

there are quite a few bagless uprights which deal with hepa and alergy that arnt 600 dollars. I believe black and decker has a nice one ...

I have a Dyson. It works great as an upright with the cat hair and dust, but the attachments are not so effective when using it as a hose sweeper. I am happy I got it, but it is not as absolutely astounding in all areas as I had hoped it would be.

I'm with you on the Dyson. Maybe if I save up some money I can get one.

I checked, since I didn't remember what CR said about the Dyson. The Dyson DC15 The Ball All Floors at $500 was ranked #6 in their 2007 tests. Ahead of it were 2 Kenmores (both $300) an Electrolux, a Hoover, and a Eureka. One of the Kenmores and the Eureka (a $150 model) say they have a HEPA filter. They tested 38 uprights total.

I can send more info if you want... I guess if it was me, I'd lean more towards a less expensive model that was ranked just as well. Your Dr. or allergist might have reccommendations, too.

Ed loves the Dyson. So much I haven't been allowed to use it yet. We also got the pet hair one. Sears had it cheaper than anyone else, even Kohls, who sells it for less than market. Think we paid $500 for the top of the line.

Dyson animal! I curse myself for being too cheap to buy one when we bought our new one.

Everyone I know who has a Dyson seems to like it. The local discount chain Ollies has refurb Animal Dyson for $399. My only worry is they are mostly plastic.
I love my used Kirby, it is 20 plus years old, with the hose it works better than many canister vacs. Built like a tank, the new ones are too damn expensive, newer ones have hepa.
My two cents.
