Need your opinon

So I'm starting to work on my Oath of Service for my elevation. No I'm not doing an Oath of Fealty. As a Cossack it wouldn't be period for me to do so.

My question is... what do you think of me doing it in Russian, provided I can find someone who can translate (then put it into western transliteration) for me?

while i like the idea personally, in principle it makes me question the point of taking a *publically-sworn* oath of any kind, if the ears hearing it can't speak the language in which it is uttered?

presumably the crown will receive the written (english) translation, but you're swearing the oath in front of the attending populace as well. if the nature of the oath is such that being heard in front of witnesses who can then help hold you to the oath and help you achieve the things you've sworn, doesn't it necessitate their ability to comprehend the oath?

my suggestion would be to offer the oath in both languages, if you're keen to do it in russian; swear it in russian, have the herald read the translation and ask you to confirm the translation as being true to the oath you offered. that way you can meet the desire to speak the language of your persona, AND offer the oath in a language that your witnesses can understand. otherwise, offering oaths in a language almost no-one there will speak is simply a door to "plausible deniability" somewhere down the line, in the "no, i never said THAT in my oath, honest" line of things.

... which may also be perfectly in keeping with a minxy Cossack persona; i can't help you on that one ;-)

*my* opinion is that I happen to enjoy such things. Your elevation happens but once.. make of it all that you will with no shame. :) The one question I have for you... would you be stressed over trying to learn to pronounce it? If not.. I think it'd be great.

I believe Baroness Gulietta may be somewhat familiar with the Ukranian/Russian linguistics and may be able to assist in the translation. There is also a fairly large Ukranian community in my local area if you find no other resources.

I think it would be cool, especially if you fore-warned their majesties and they wanted to respond (or have their herald) respond in kind.

As a courtesy, you can give their majesties/the court herald an english translation of your words, which can be read or not.

One of the memories that stuck with me.. Her Majesty Elizabeth of Atlantia.. they had someone come up and give fealty in French and another, I believe in Latin. With no hesitation.. her Majesty responded back in kind. I thought that was just awesome, especially since it tied in with the presentation and garb.

The cincher for me would be how does your time look? If you are doing fine and projects and this would make you happier, then do it. If you aren't certain.. try it in front of Dicea and Kate.. see how it feels to speak it and do it, if you like it, do it.

I believe if you want to make this happen, people can be found to help.. if you want/need help. :)

This should be fun and a meaningful day for you. Do what will make it special for you.. not other people. :) It is also a way to include someone else in the ceremony, if you want.. you speak the Russian and someone else (important/special to you) could read the english translation. Just keep their Majesties in the loop on the plans and it should be fine. :)
