Here is a memory that influences every thought that I have of him... After the end of Dorinda I's Queen's Rapier Championship, he took claim of an empty list and started calling out names of people to come fight him. I was quickly called over, and off I ran to fight The Duke. I was a newly made Alce (by him and Meirwen two months prior) and wanted to prove him correct in his assessment. We went at it, and a couple of times, he would throw a hand block that would put all of that power of his on my quillon and leave me helpless. He then on another pass popped my blade out of my hand. This was getting tougher and tougher, trying to land a touch on him. On a subsequent pass, I caught the right timing * and disarmed him! * I was thrilled and ready to ask for him to yield ...when he stepped forward, grabbed my head in his to big hands, and had me dance around like a marionette. Through a jostled voice, I stuttered, "Your Grace?" and (this is the part that sticks with me) he giggled like a little kid.
It is one of my favorite fencing memories period, and it is so typical of him.
