I have found great delight in listening to audiobooks on my iPod while at work. And really like using Librivox.org to get them.

So far I have listened to and enjoyed Anne of Green Gables, Jane Eyre, Frankenstein, Picture of Dorian Gray.

I have listened to and somewhat enjoyed Pride and Prejudice, and Alice in Wonderland

I have tried to listen to but can't get through Emma. (I made it to part 10 today when I realized I had not paid any attention to the story and could care less too)

I have downloaded but have not yet listened to Dorothy and the Wizard.

I need suggestions of other classics to download to listen to. I really like historical romances/regency romances (usually) and really like Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, but find I"m not a fangirl of Jane Austen. I like the Victorian Horror/thriller Stories too like Frankenstein, Dracula, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Picture of Dorian Gray.

So, my friends, can you suggest stories and/or authors I should investigate? Can you recommend other public domain/free audiobook sites?

Wilkie Collins, his most famous work is "The Moonstone".

There are always the Sherlock Holmes stories, and if you can stand him...Dickens.

How about Walter Scott, Ivenhoe and that lot.

There is the rest of the Anne of Green Gables series, if you haven't already listened to that.

Wide Sargasso Sea (Jean Rhys) might also be an option (given that you enjoyed Jane Eyre)

Jules Verne and HG Wells might also be options on the fantasy/horror side of things.

Charles Dickens is another author who would fit the bill, but how good his books would be via audio book is another matter!

Rebecca, Dragonwyck, Bleak House, Woman in White (Wilkie Collins), The Monk (by Lewis), any of the books by Ann Radcliff. Those should keep you going for awhile.

I think that you would enjoy Gustave Flaubert's "Salambo."

Don't know where to find free audiobooks (very interested in what you've found, though!), but Georgette Heyer would be a good bet. Like Austen, but vastly better!

My secret vice comes out - I have been a Georgette Heyer fan since college. I have about 4 of her books on tape or cd. Not sure how to get the tape ones onto an Ipod, but I am willing to work on copies for you.
I also just got the new Valdemar book, in her new Foundation subseries, on cd.
Let me know if you are interested.
I am such a fan of hers - she is my DEEP stress relief - that I have many of the books in the leather bound editions.
