Weekend Review

Friday:
-I got up way early so that I could drop Grimm off at the girls' house and still be to work by 7:15. I needed to go in early so that I could leave early.
-Left work, ran and picked up a book I wanted, then spotting the liquor store across the plaza, stopped in there as I knew that for some reason this weekend would be a "we need booze" weekend.
-Then ran home and got the medication I forgot to pack, then off to the girls' to pick up the 'dicea and the dog and head out to the first stop on our trip.
-Reached Rochester by 6 and spent a few moments decompressing from the drive with Pleasance before the big adventure. I can honestly say I think I lost at least 2 pounds just from the haircut. She was great! She has a great eye and what I loved most - she listened to what I and 'dicea wanted for the haircut. I now have what dicea calls "Hitler Youth haircut". We totally didn't think to do before and after pictures, but sometime this week I will get 'dicea to take pictures to show those who did not see it at the event. Pleasance is also going to see if the braid is long enough for Locks of Love.
-After the haircut, spent a little bit more time hanging with Pleasance and Mateo, learned about their living reef and all. Then it was back on the road.
-Then the "FUN" started.
-Prior to this trip, the breaks occasionally squeaked but nothing that seemed more than a "I should probably get this in with my next oil change and have them looked at". After all, it was an intermittent squeak, not a constant. Well, when we stopped to get gas, the breaks, rather than squeaking, were making that nasty metal on metal grinding sound.
-We made it to the Caer without really using the breaks at all.
-Decompressed with Ro and Tofi and watched Grimm and Jiro become reacquainted and then BFFs.
-Bed.
Saturday:
-Up and fed. Got directions to the Midas in Utica. Left Grimm at the Caer to play with Jiro and headed off to take care of scary sounding breaks.
-Somehow made it to Midas with very little actual break activity.
-Diagnosis: Front Driver's side break pad totally gone, rotor totally trashed. Must be replaced. Front passenger side break - pad paper thin, rotor showing wear. Back are OK for now but will need replacing within the year.
-Result: ended up replacing pads and rotors for both sides. They said I could have managed to get home without replacing passenger side rotor, but opted for replace both at once. Appreciated them not trying to convince me to replace it then and there or the back ones. $400 spent that was not budgeted but needed.
-Went to the zoo while waiting for the breaks to be repaired. Got in free with our Buffalo Zoo bitch status. Great way to kill the hour.
-Back to the Caer, check in with the Meirwen and the boys then headed out to the event.
-Got to the event in time to watch Baby Harp Seal rugby. I had totally forgotten how much fun that game is. Hopefully it returns with more regularity.
-After the event 'dicea and I went with Meirwen to this great little eating establishment not that far from the Caer. VERY yummy food at reasonable prices. I can see why she and Ro go there all the time.
-Back to the Caer for some down time while waiting for rest of party to get home from the event. Then drinking and fun quiet time before bed.
-Sometime in the middle of the night, one of the cats came to visit us in the bedroom. We suspect it was Sam. Grimm, having the impression all cats are playmates, went to great said cat with his usual rearing up to invite play, and got the business-end of the claws across his chest, part of his belly and thigh. Also a rather deep scratch on his side. The ear piercing cries are not how I recommend being woken up in the middle of the night. Especially when you are not in your own bed and can easily find the lights. But reassurances were made with the puppy once we determined that he was OK (though we did not find the deep scratch until the next day - and meirwen, this would have been the scratch he yelped from when picked up as it's right along his left ribs). Though we managed to get Grimm calmed down, it took longer for Ro to calm Jiro down who desperately wanted to help his new friend against whatever monster made him cry like that.
-Eventually back to sleep.
Sunday
-Wonderful breakfast with family. Matt and Jeci and Michael all came just in time.
-After breakfast we had Sunday Morning Staff Meeting (TM) so that we could get ideas set for War. Those details will come later.
-Then we tackled the "to-do list" and I feel we were really productive for the couple hours we worked. I would have loved to have been able to get more done, but hopefully what was done was most helpful to the ladies.
-Eventually back on the road and home to Boogie and Darcy.
All in all it was a nice weekend.

Date: 2009-06-08 05:40 pm (UTC)When breaks squeak, it is $30 in pads, if you leave them to long, it is new rotors which gets $$$ :-P
Regular maintenance is cheaper in the long run ;)
Glad you all made it safely through the trip!
