I had been under the impression that alcohol at all was a no-no because we actually cut out pretty much anything alcohol related in the programs we air.
And - not only do I like rum, he remembered from a conversation we had ages ago what my preferred brand was.
The Prophet (PBAH) was a very moderate man. Very concerned with justice and equity. The prohibition against praying while intoxicated is mostly because one cannot be mindful of one's prayer when one's mind is not firing on all cylinders. The basis of Islamic law is generally very practical -- the punishments seem harsh to us, but they were comparatively mild 1400 years ago.
Because the Saudis have so much clout -- basically they're the custodians of the main holy places on the one hand and have far too much money on the other -- most Muslims do their best not to annoy them.

Happy birthday!

I would add, this is mostly a male affection, not many of the Muslim women I know participate.
