The Grass Child walked out away from the dwellings, leaving a trail of footprints in the snow, and smiled. There, a distance from the bright lights, she could look up and enjoy the night. To some this was a holy night. The change of seasons. To some it was just another evening.

Tonight was the moment in time when the dark of night pushed away the warmth of Grandfather Sun for the longest period of time during the year. After this night, the days would start getting longer, the nights shorter and life would stir again from the depths.

But this night was different than past Longest Nights. Tonight, Grandmother Moon would shine bright and full and help hold back the dark of night. She would gaze upon her children and bathe the world in her light.

The power of the Moonpaths would be the strongest it had been in a long time. The pull of the dark of the Longest Night and the fullness of Grandmother Moon called to her. Her bones may be old, but the spirit is forever young and tonight she would dance with the wolf, and fly with the eagle and run with the horse.

And, if as predicted, Mother Earth became jealous of the love between Grandmother Moon and Grandfather Sun and tried to come between them, The Grass Child would be patient, for what else could be done. Boundaries had to be tested. But the love of Grandmother Moon and Grandfather Sun could not be denied and eventually Grandmother would shine brightly again.

The Grass Child stopped and removed her shoes. The snow was cold between her toes, but the sleeping grass beneath tickled. She giggled. It was good and right.

And as the fullness of Grandmother Moon came into view she began to sing. The song was none that any knew. It was the song of her heart. A welcome to the Grandmother, a chasing away of the dark, an affirmation of life.

As she began to sink into her meditation she continued to sing and giggle. She knew deep in her soul that the night would pass. The dawn would come and life would go on.

What better gift could be given on this, the Longest of Nights with the Most Light?
