baronessekat: (medieval)

For those who did not make it to Siege of Harlech III this weekend and/or are not following me on FB, here's the scroll that went out for Mistress Odriana vander Brugghe. I did the illumination, THL Sophie Davenport did the calligraphy and Master Fridrikr Tomasson wrote the words.

The recipient left the style up to me. I found a Dutch manuscript that showed an eclesiastical heraldic achievement so I went with as an inspiration. She told me she likes hounds and kitchen items (which isn't surprising given she got her laurel for cooking). With help of her husband I got pictures of her two dogs to use for the markings of the supporters and I found a medieval achievement that had as a crest a hand maintaining an arrow so I changed the arrow to a spoon.

It was done on goatskin parchment but I used modern paints. I did not have the time or patience to do period pigments and get the color saturation that I wanted.

There are things I would have liked to have done different, but all in all I am happy with how it came out and my art didn't look too bad next to Sophie's beautiful letters.

As gorgeous as the picture is, it still doesn't do the real thing justice. It was phenomenal. All three of you did a fantastic job.

The motto, for those interested, translates (at least through Google Translate) as "Dare something worthy."
