SO the gym I belong to has closed their pool, whirpool and steamrooms. Claiming that "As we work to transform the old Bally clubs we acquired into the Blast Fitness concept, we will no longer be offering swimming pool, whirlpool or steam room amenities at our clubs.

We believe that allowing our clubs to focus on core fitness elements, we will be able to provide our members, as a whole, a better opportunity to reach their health and wellness goals through individual exercise programs and group classes."

The main reason I joined this particular gym was for the pool. I love to swim. That and it's only just up the road from home and work so there is a convenience factor.

Yesterday Captain Æthelmearc and I went to check out another gym that my coworker goes to and has a pool. It's not convenient to get to but it has a pool.

The guy giving us the tour turned us off almost immediately. Despite several times of saying that we currently belong to a gym and use the machines there, he insisted on showing us how all the cardio equipment worked. He only asked if we had any issues with arthritis or bad knees. Upon us saying no he apparently knew everything he needed to know about us and our goals and health and tried to say things like "well carole, I think this would be the best machine for you". And he constantly tried to tell me that the treadmill should only be done for no more than 12 minutes or the pounding on the knees will cause damage.

I blinked at him and was even said, "I do an hour on the treadmill." I got "all that running on the treadmill is bad for your knees". I ended up snapping at him saying "I never said I ran on the treadmill. And if an hour of running on the treadmill is bad, what do you say to marathon runners?"

The Captain got more and more visably annoyed with him and his attitude. We eventually got him to show us the rest of the gym and the pool. The pool was extremely small and the idiot kept saying things like 'well if you come to one of the aqua classes you can then take what you learn there and do things yourself' and didn't grasp when we said "your classes are during the day and we actually have jobs".

Upon walking back to the front he was all "let me circle some classes on our schedule that I think would be good for each of you." I told him "don't bother. We are familiar with the types of classes you have and if we have a question we'll ask later." Especially since he asked no questions beyond the knees and arthritis. No other health issues like heart or breathing problems or other joint problems. No questions about what our goals are, our lifestyle is like. He looked at the Captain and saw a short, overweight woman with grey hair and jumped to conclusions. I can only imagine that he saw something similar with me only without the grey hair.

His attitude completely drove us away. And even if their prices fell within reasonable for me, he alone will keep me from ever spending any money there.

I may keep my membership where I am, just drop it down from the level I had to get unlimited pool and class access. I don't know. All I know is that, 18 hours later, I am still pissed off at the guy at the other gym.
