waste of time

what a complete waste of my time, and yes, I finished the audio book.
by the third disc I was absolutely tired of every description being a flowery prose of metaphors and similes. Why use just the phrase "the sky was blue" when you could use 20 words to describe it?
By disc 10 I realized I had absolutely no emotions what so ever regarding the main character/narrator (whose name we never do learn). I saw absolutely no growth or redeeming value to him as a person or character. And he was never able to refer to the secondary main character except by her full name. Couldn't we occasionally call her just Maryann when talking about her instead of Maryann Engle? And I really had no sympathy for his problems or her problems.
The only reason I finished the book was because I was only moderately interested in how the little stories Maryann told would finish. But by disc 13 I no longer really cared and only finished listening to it out of a case of "well I got 13/16 of the way through, I might as well finish it" mentality. And even then I only listened to it in the car on my way to and from work and even then those 15 minutes a day was a stretch of my patience and attention.
I do not understand how anyone enjoyed it, but I'm glad someone did. I would certainly not recommend this book in the least and I wonder what algorithm Goodreads had to recommend it to me in the first place.
