Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi AdeyemiMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
This book kept popping up on recommendation lists and celebrity book reads and I thought that it sounded interesting.
Whoa. This book is purely a force of nature. Made more so by Bahni Turpin's amazing reading of it. It was a wonderfully compelling combination of fantasy and West African Spirituality and Religions that was something that I do not think has been seen before (or at least not in a very long time).
11 years ago, the King murdered all the maji - the magic workers who were the connection to the gods- and causing magic to leave the lands. Any who showed that they had the latent abilities to work magic were taxed and oppressed into virtual slavery. But through the work of a handful of young people there is a chance that they can bring magic back and maybe free the people as well.
This is one of those books that I will be relentlessly checking on to see if book two is out yet because it was just that good - though it could stand on it's own.
All I can say is - go. Read it now. Better yet, listen to the story.
