First they came for their passports. Then their jobs. Then their rights to finances, internet, knowledge. And finally they came for their voices.

In the near future, the United States as become a Oligarchian Theocracy run by the all consuming Far Right Conservative Christians from the Bible Belt. All female (even small children) are fitted with shock bracelets and are allowed to only speak 100 words a day. All finances, books, tv, computer time are strictly controlled by their husbands or closest male relative. If they have none, woman are sent to labor camps. Gays are sent to "re-education" camps to either convert and become good husbands to women, or suffer the same fate as single women - silent forced labor.

Children are split by gender. Boys go to all boys schools and learn all the stuff including proper "Christian Fundamentals". Girls go to all girls schools and learn basic math and homemaking skills. Just what they need to know in order to run a proper house.

Before all this happened, Jean McClean was a doctor of neuroscience, specializing in cognitive linguistics. But that was all taken away when the words were taken. Now she struggles to figure out how to protect her six year old daughter and keep her sons from being indoctrinated by the insanity that as taken over the country.

This was a book I was both looking forward to and almost dreading. It is scary in a great many ways. But at the same time, I kinda felt a little let down by the story.

I don't know if I would recommend it or not, but it I am glad I listened to it.
