Dread Nation by Justina IrelandMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
More of a 4.5 rating.
Jane was born during the War Between the States, just days before the dead rose up from a battlefield in Gettysburg. That brought the war to a rather sudden stop as there was a new danger to face.
In the years following the rising, a new political party - the Survivalist Party - sprang into being and became one of the more powerful aspects of government. Though their actions and other members of government a new law was enacted, while free, Negros and Native Americans now had to send their children to training camps when to learn how to defend and fight against what has come to be called "the Shamblers". Jane was one such child - but she got sent to one of the more prestigious schools so she could eventually become an Attendant - serving a rich family in protecting the Lady and girls of the house. The problem is that Jane has a bit of a willful streak and she ends up getting sent away.
This causes her to find out that there are foul things afoot within the Survivalist Party and she may be one of the only ones trained enough to stop it.
I really liked this take on the whole zombie genre. I had been a bit leery going in as I'm always cautious about Civil War era stories. I don't know why, but I always go into them with a strong bit of skepticism and wariness. Luckily this book swept those feelings away.
Once again Bahni Turpin's reading of a book grabbed me, dragged me under and would not let me go until I was done. I am looking forward to another in this series.
