Master and Apprentice by Claudia GrayMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
Claudia Gray is quickly becoming a favored author in the Star Wars Universe (right next to Timothy Zahn).
In this book the concept of the relationship between mentor and apprentice is explored on several different levels. In the "present day" a 17-year old Padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and his Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, are sent by the Jedi Council to a planet to oversee the coronation of their young Queen now that she has come of age to take the throne. For the last 8 years, the planet had been under the Regency of a Jedi Knight and old friend of Qui-Gon. The Jedi Regent had been assigned after the untimely and accidental death of his Padawan. Throughout the story Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon have to deal with their differences and try to determine if their relationship should continue.
Meanwhile, through flashbacks, we learn about the relationship between Qui-Gon and his Jedi Master, Dooku. As a padawan he struggles to form an understanding and relationship with his mentor and thus comes to befriend Dooku's first padawan (the same Jedi who was appointed Regent).
I really liked how the author explores the idea of how mentors and apprentices need to find trust and have an open communication in order to form a strong and lasting relationship.
If you are a Star Wars fan, I would recommend this book.
