The Selection (The Selection, #1)The Selection by Kiera Cass

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

After World War 4, the United States is no more. In its place stands the Kingdom of Illea. there are now 35 states/districts/sections. The population is divided into 8 castes - with 1 being Royalty and 8 being the homeless/criminals. You are born into your caste and rarely do you get to move.

Teenager, America Singer is a 5 - part of the artisan caste. Money is tight but family is family and she loves her family dearly. She also loves Aspen, who happens to be a 6 (the servant caste). She starts work to afford to petition to marry him, though it would mean dropping down a level and becoming a 6 as well.

But then the announcement comes - Prince Maxon, the Crown Prince, is in need of a wife. Because there are no eligible options for a diplomatic marriage, his bride will be chosen by a contest known as The Selection. All unmarried girls, regardless of their casts, between the ages of 16-20 may apply to represent her district and vie for the Prince's affections.

America does not want to apply, but if she is chosen to participate, her family receives compensation while she is there. Despite pressure from her family, she only wants to marry Aspen. Until he pushes her to enter and then... breaks up with her.

Crushed she enters and is surprised to find herself one of the Selected. Now she must travel to the Palace, compete with 34 other girls, all but a few are from higher ranks that her, and try to stay as long as she can for her family, while getting over a broken heart and maybe find a friend in an unlikely person.

**************

The Bachelor + The Princes Diaries + The Hunger Games = The Selection.

This was a quick listen and a bit of fluff. I saw the "twist of the book" coming but that was OK. I enjoyed this enough to put in a request for the next book with no expectation of anything more deep" than the fluff this is.

I can see where the series is going and I'm actually intrigued enough to want to know how the inevitable is reached.
