Every year I see that one or two things that just dance on a shelf or the computer screen and scream "BUY ME FOR SO-AND-SO FOR CHRISTMAS". So I do.

This year the gift was for one of my directors. His special needs daughter died in her sleep when she was 12 a couple years ago, and even now he talks about her all the time.

This past spring he said that he always associated dragonflies with her because when they would go camping, it seemed like dragonflies would flock to her. And then when I hung the Holiday decorations in our office area he specifically asked for the purple stocking for his door as that was Jessie's favorite color.

Anyway, while browsing amazon a couple weeks ago, I saw a travel mug (and he uses one all the time) with a purple dragonfly on it. Despite it being a bit more than I had originally budgeted for him, I couldn't resist and bought it for him for his gift.

I gave it to him this morning. When he opened it, he gasped, started tearing up and hugged me - hard. He said he couldn't believe I remembered such offhanded comments.

I just smiled and wished him a Merry Christmas.

Sometimes the little added cost makes it all worth while.

It's getting to be that time of year.

If you would like a Christmas Card, please comment with your address (all comments screened). Even if you have sent it to me before, please. (I lost my address book).

Long but productive weekend.

Much thanks to [livejournal.com profile] tessathehuntres, [livejournal.com profile] hearne, the Teenager and the Munchkin. Not to mention my faithful sidekick [livejournal.com profile] dicea. LOTS got done.

*Master bathroom is FINISHED!. Hearne got the crown molding cut and up. And the Teenager got the over the toilet cabinet put together and up.
*1/2 bath just needs the crown molding painted and up, but it's been cut so the getting painted and up part is easy. (Dicea says that the paint job makes it look like a French Whore's Privy. I'm not sure what to think about the description).
*Guest bath's wall paper has been stripped (a project I'm so greatful to the huntress and teenager for).
*Kitchen has been stripped.
*Dresser has been moved to the spare room so that is now officially done as well.

I am once again ahead of schedule! Next weekend i'm thinking of either taking a weekend to myself again, or going by myself to the Doma and painting the guest bath. I have the paint and I like the painting in solitude. It's very relaxing. I might also stain the window and put a base coat down in the kitchen so when [livejournal.com profile] visrose comes out at the end of the month it's ready for the tuscan plastering technique.

I need to redo the curtain I made for the 1/2 bath but that's jsut a matter of pulling out some whip stitches that are holding pleats in and repleating to make it fit the window better.

I forgot my camera this past weekend so maybe next weekend I'll take it with me to take pictures.

Easter prep was interesting. It was hard not having mom there. I tried not to let it show when it was getting to me. But just carried on and got things done that needed to get done. Coloring eggs with the munchkin. Prepping and making the feast for Easter dinner.

My aunt was unable to make it due to her father being in the hospital with pneumonia, but Uncle Alan came for dinner. Was good to see him and he said he liked all the things I've gotten done with the house so far. Next time they see it I hope to be pretty much done with the painting and curtains. Flooring will probably not be done though. But still.

Missed the Boogie this weekend but she wasn't feeling well, and while her presence was missed, we all understood. I've missed a couple easter dinners due to being sick, myself.

but dinner consisted of a honey glazed spiral ham, escalloped potatoes (mom style), corn, green beans, veggie relish tray (done mostly by the Teenager and the Munchkin. Many thanks!), pickle relish tray, deviled eggs (put together by the Munchkin), hard boiled eggs, and a pass it around the table salad bar, along with rolls. Alan brought the very yummy cupcakes my aunt made for dessert. And we had Gizzies (made by the Dicea) for munching on all throughout Saturday and Sunday.

But the best part thing of the weekend... Dicea made home made raised donuts!!! OMG Yummy!!!

I didn't get much sleep this weekend for various reasons so I'm probably going to be grabbing a bite to eat and heading to bed very soon.

[livejournal.com profile] eternalmusings, if I'm awake later I'll call. I'm sorry I didn't last night but came home and crashed right out. I'm not sure if I'll be awake much past 7 tonight either. But I will call before the end of the week.

Overall I'm happy with how my first holiday without mom in the Doma went. But for now... I'm gonna go rest.

Thanksgiving itself was fairly uneventful. Low key with just my mother, sister, aunt and uncle. Food was, as always, delicious. And after dinner, while my mother and uncle discussed geneology my aunt, sister and I poured through the great pile of Black Friday ads to see what to go shopping for.

See, sis and I have a tradition we started a good 6 years ago or so. (Maybe less, maybe more I can't remember). We get up and head to the Galleria Mall, which is the largest mall in the Buffalo area. Now, we are not part of that insane "have to be there when the store opens" crowed. More of the "Let's aim to get there about an hour or so before the end of the doorbuster sales and if the things we would like are still in stock great, if not.. oh well" school of thinking.

Over the past years the mall has actually been fairly lowkey. In fact, several years ago, [livejournal.com profile] athersgeo came over from England for a visit during the holidays and we took her there and had to constantly say, "we know you got warned about the hell of Black Friday, believe us, it's usually A LOT busier than this". This year there were actually a lot more people there.

We had about a 30 minute wait in line at Bon Ton (but I'm sorry, when you can get sets of flannel sheets that are normally $116 a set for $16.95 - you put up with standing in line for half an hour.). We met a very nice pair of ladies who came down from Toronto just to go shopping. They told me that Canada doesn't have the kind of sales exeperience like Black Friday. That surprised me as I thought Boxing Day would have been the Canadian equivalent.

There was the usual "things over heard in line" situations. One of which I will put in my next post because I'm going to make it into a challenge for my readers.

After we got out of Bon Ton, we went and did our other Black Friday tradition... we went and saw a movie. This year was Goblet of Fire. I liked it. Thought they left a lot out but understood why they had to in order to keep it from being 8 hours long.

Then after the movie off to do more shopping.

We left the mall about 4:45 (having gotten there at about 10-ish) and went to Pier 1 and Target.

Then the fun began. What normally takes me about 15 minutes to drive ended up taking 45. We got slammed with snow. Horrible visibility, white out conditions, the works. So rather than take the sister home, she ended up crashing at my place which is closer to the mall than Moms.

The weather this morning said we got 10 inches at the airport, which means 10 inches at my place (as I'm only about 5 blocks from it). I have to go out and shovel so that when she wakes up, I can take sis home. Then to finish up a little bit.

All I need to do is get stuff for said sister (hard to really shop for her when she's there with me), Morguhn and Ro. (Meirwen... any suggestions for them???) But otherwise I'm pretty much done. Boo and Boogie are done save for one item that is only on sale today. Meirwen's done. The squire brothers and sisters are done. Mom's done. Even the little gifties for the girls at work are done.

Right on schedule for me. Just need xmas cards, and put up the tree and I"m ready for Christmas.

Now all I have to do is go shovel out the driveway.

Hope everyone else had a good and happy holiday.

I like halloween. I miss it.

For five years I lived in an apartment on the second floor of a house that the only entrance too was in the back of the house. This house was also in a really not nice part of the city. So I didn't get trick or treaters.

Before that I lived in a house in a really good section of the city and saw tons of them. I loved seeing little kids dressed up. Giving big kids a hard time for not being more original than throwing their JV football jersey on to go out begging for candy.

Now I live in an OK neighborhood full of townhouses and track homes. And tonight... two kids came to my door between the hours of 5:30 and 9pm. I used to love going to the mult unit homes when I was a kid and went trick or treating. twice the candy for half the effort. (that my friends is the economy of trick or treating).

And these two didn't look to really have costumes on.

What happened to halloween?

I didn't hear about any parties until after the fact. Work's Idea of costume contests was lame as all get out.

I only saw one halloween special on TV when there used to be lots of them.

IT's also the first year in seven that I didn't have my beloved halloweenn cat. It's hard to believe that next weekend will mark a year since I had to say goodbye to him.

I still remember getting him the week before halloween, when he was all of 8 weeks old. Him stalking my roommate's cat. coming down after an event to find him curled up sleeping happily on Hamish's stomach. How proud he was when he caught and killed his first mouse. How he talked... really talked to me and other people. And how he told me it was ok to say goodbye to those we love.

So as the year ends and another begins, I look back and say goodbye to things I loved and turn my face towards the future to see what new things I can learn to enjoy.

Blessed be.
