My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This is a book, when it was first brought to my attention, I was rather eh about it. I did not think that I would be the target audience or find much in it that would appeal to me. Oh sure, I was hard core into fanfiction when I was younger... though older than the character in the book. But other than that, I still couldn't find the excitement for this book. But then a coworker said "you need to read this book," and shortly after that my sister said "you need to read this book," and it kept coming up in my radar so I broke down and listened to the audio. And I'm glad I did.
I totally could relate to Cath. I understood the need to escape the world and thus submersing oneself into a fandom, writing about beloved characters, finding others who felt the same way. Heck, I have several friends now, that I have only met online through fan forums, that are just as important to me as any of the friends I have made in person. I could relate to Cath on wanting to say "I don't care, fail me" when things got emotionally hard while at college.
Throughout this entire book, it felt like the author had taken a look at my younger self and used creative license and wrote a fanfiction story about me, or my friends.
This was definitely a book I am glad I have encountered.
