Black Sun (Between Earth and Sky, #1)Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

4.5 but good enough to round up.

In a culture resembling those of Pre-Columbian Middle and South America, the coming winter solstice is coming with an eclipse.

There is ongoing political intrigue amongst the High Priests as they get ready for the celebration of the solstice, while one of the great clans believes that their patron god is destined to come back to the world under the Black Sun and bring vengeance against the High Priests for the slaughter of members of the clan several generations ago.

Meanwhile a female sea captain from a discriminated culture is hired by a head of a different great clan to make sure a harmless blind man makes it to the city in time for the solstice celebration. But she soon learns that he is far from what he seams - and harmless is not something he should be called.

+++++

I was leery going into this book as I read a Star Wars book by this author and was less than thrilled. But I have seen and heard good reviews on this book so decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did. This was an engrossing story and I kept wanting to get back to it to find out what was going to happen.

I would recommend this book - but be warned, book two has not been published as of this review writing.
