as I'm working on putting up the Ancient Christmas Tree (it's at least as old as I am), I got to thinking back to my childhood.

When he was able to, Dad always put the tree up then strung the lights on it. After he was done, my sister and I would come along and put the ornaments on. Mom or Dad then put the metallic garland on and the angel topper.

That was the ritual. And Dad always insisted on the lights after the tree went up. Me, I put the lights on as I go so that I can get the lights deep in to give depth to the lights.

so I ask, those of you who have artificial trees:

The male figures in my family thought the same as your father. Tree goes together, then the lights go on. TheMarine got real trees most of the time, so that was cheating. :) But when I was younger, we put all the pieces together, then the lights would get put on. I guess that's just how I was just conditioned, cuz that's how I do it now. *smile*

Strangely enough, the male in my family has ZERO involvement in the tree putting up. My dad was the same way. :-/ He put the tree up and lights and we decorated. Now it's all my job.
Goes to show how little the hubby cares for Christmas, huh.

Lights go on in two layers, one string--first layer--inside near the trunk, then a second (sometimes third if necessary) go out closer to the tips.
Daddy always put the lights on.

Boss used to try, then proved to be hopeless at it--mostly because he got so aggravated that he didn't like himself. It became my job.

I have a fake pre-lit but there aren't enough lights and I add more. never enough colored sparkly lights!

Growing up there was my mom and I. We put the tree up and made sure it wasn't going to fall (we had two bad years that wiped out a lot of our favorite decorations. One of those years involved kittens. Grr!), then loaded it zillions of lights, then the filler ornaments, then the good ones were placed to best effect.

All but the fact that it's a pre-lit fake and it stays up are our order of business now. Well, and we have enough gorgeous ornaments that the fillers don't go on.

I haven't put up a tree since I gave away my aluminum one. We Christmas with my folks, so it seems silly to decorate and then leave it. BUT - when putting up tree - lights. LOTS of lights. Inside near trunk, outside, many many lights. My Dad must have 15 strings of them. They don't ALL go on - he stops whem Mom yells for the third time.

I go for the whole "depth" thing as well, but I light from the top down, so your way wouldn't work for me. Do most people light from the top down or the bottom up?....
