Answer: Taliesen actually presented himself shortly after my father died. When I discovered dad had Cancer, a black jackal muse entered my head and stayed for a while. He's still around but not prominent. He was kind of a City of Angels-like death angel that brought a lot of comfort to me.

Taliesen came into my head shortly after dad died and his spirituality and odd cheerfulness I think was needed at the time and he still inspires me on many levels spiritually, artistically, etc. He sort of came to me like an angelic icon and stuck around.

*edit* this is also why I can't just look at him as JUST a character. He is in every way shape and form a muse.

Why moons?
re: e) I grew up in Minnesota (Bloomington), have lived in Alabama, Connecticut, New York (J is a native New Yorker)and Wisconsin. Our last move as a family was to Madeline Island (La Pointe, Wisconsin). I think it is the first place that allowed me to become me, if that makes any sense. I really got into a variety of art/craft forms there; it is a very arts-encouraging environment. My daughters grew from little girls to amazingly wonderful, strong, creative, caring, intelligent women there. While I am no longer on the Island, I am still in far Northern Wisconsin. There is just something I love about being here.

First, I'm flattered that you are my friend. That's how it is, for sure. I didn't think anyone remembered the Fire Marshal stuff any more (now that there are no rules, no body cares.)

Yeah, the head-desk is what I do at work from time to time.

I can best answer with a story (imagine that...) about Knot. He came to me to learn drumming. After a while, he said to me, "I like the drumming, but I don't want to do that Arabic stuff." I said that it was okay with me. Some time later, I ran into him and his lady at an event, where they had set up an opulent "day camp" that over-shadowed my own setting. So, I had to pull out more stuff, and the next event, so did they. He kept dressing more and more Arabic... She said that they were "trying to out do the Dur."

Eventually I asked him why, after he had told me that he had no interest in the culture, that he started to adopt it. He said, "People would ask me questions about the culture for which I knew nothing. When I told them that, they said 'But, you're a drummer!' like I was endowed with a special power of knowing things. Well, that got me looking things up to get answers, and it was interesting, and I started using the stuff." He added, "My lady really likes this too, now that we found it."

I laughed, and said "You know, that same thing happened to me too!"

(I really don't have to make stuff up, because life is so strange!)

When I was much younger, I wanted to be a dolphin trainer, which I then adapted to marine biologist. In HS I switched over to Vet. Then I realized that vets had to do paperwork and couldn't spend all day playing with the puppies and kitties and whatnot, and then I just didn't know what to do with myself.

I became a firefighter when I moved back to Schodack from Binghamton, in 1986. My dad had joined the firehouse two years earlier, and I figured it would be a good idea for me to join, too. Plus they had free beer on meeting nights.

I went for my EMT when I got done with grad school. I had been an Red Cross Advanced First Aid-er before, and it wasn't much of a change to go from AFA to the EMT. It just added better airway management and oxygen, a couple of immobilization devices, and the ambulance time. I joined the ambulance because I realized I needed more than riding with the fire department to keep my skills up.

When I went to college, I went to an activities fair and hooked up with a D&D group. I figured that was where I would spend most of my time. I also picked up a flyer for the "Purdue Medieval Club". Turned out that the D&D players were all the stuff of a bad 80's movie, including a guy who collected pocket lint. They scared me. Thus I went to a meeting of the Medieval Club, met a man named Moonwulf and some cool friends of his, and my SCA life was born.

My thoughts on moving back to Buffalo are summed up in a scene from "Secret of My Success" with Michael J Fox. At one point he pulls out a bus ticket and says (paraphrased) "you know what this is? its my round trip ticket home. The day I have to use this is the day I admitted I couldn't make it out in the world on my own."

That stuck with me... moving to Buffalo would be like moving backwards for me, maybe someday i'll get over it... but not right just yet.

I can't remember ever wanting to be anything other than a lead singer in a rock and roll band. Fortunately I got to do it, with some small degree of success... enough to realize that it was far less appealing than I'd always imagined. I was then able to shift my focus just in time :-) But I never went though that "astronaut, fireman, racecar driver" thing as a child.... it was always "Rock Star" :-)

I would tell you this much, I can't remember when I met you, but you've been a fixture in my mind for a very long time.

Do you have any photos of you in something fancy that's not SCA? Something that makes you feel particularly good, like going out clothes? I've only ever seen you in either SCA clothes or funeral clothes.

That's harder. Of all of them, I like the one of you in purple the most. Mind you the Firefly ones are pretty good, like the "I'm going to the Special Hell" one.

There's only been a couple photos of me that I have liked. The icon of "not just another pretty face" that I have is one from when I was 4. The other one was one of my High School Sr. pictures. I will have to try to find a copy of it and rescan it as I lost the scan I had when my old computer died.
